Intoxication - Chapter 4

"Ninomiya!" A voice came shouting at Nino's ears, making him come back to his senses. He then suddenly felt something hit his head hard-- it was the book his teacher was holding. "Ninomiya, you're sleeping in class again! One more and I'll send you out!"

"I'm sorry, Ma'am," Nino bowed his head.

"As I was saying..." His teacher then turned away from him and continued on discussing his lesson.

Nino could see some of his classmates glancing at him and snickering from a distance. He let out a sigh, "Whatever..." he grumbled.

The bell had rang, signalling it was lunch time. All the students, like swarms, went out of their classrooms. Nino, not wanting to get crushed and bumped by the crowd, waited for them to leave before he went off himself. He then walks the almost empty hallway on his own.

Nino was now a freshman, however it seemed his social status did not improve. He was still the outsider of his class. He isn't one of the bright students in class; his grades merely average, he wasn't that physically fit either. He was considered an easy target for people to pick and make fun of, even Nino himself knew that.

"Yo! Nino!" Aiba called out to him and waved his hand.

"Yo," Nino greeted and went to him.

"Aw man," Aiba exclaims. "It sucks that we're in seperate classes now."

"Hey, at least no one will bother me now if I sleep during breaks." Nino mocked.

"Hey!" Aiba then gives Nino a slight push. "How dare you say that! Don't you know how much I miss you?" He cried.

"Don't be such a big baby." Nino replied. "Your house is just a few blocks from ours."

"But, still! That's different!" Aiba whined.

Nino laughs. "Whatever! We can't do anything about it anyway."

The two then continued chatting as they walked around the school campus and went to where the benches were, near the school soccer field. They then sat down on one of the benches. "Yes! Dumplings!" Aiba exclaims as he opens his bento. "Thank you for the meal!" He says and puts one in his mouth.

Meanwhile, Nino opens his bento, looking dissatisfied. Apparently his mother gave him a healthy lunch for today: sandwiches, salad, and assorted fruits. "Hey, Aiba, may have some of those dumplings?" He asks.

"Sure! Go ahead." Aiba said.

Suddenly they heard a yell. The two then looked to where it came from; a group of students were doing rowdy playing at the field. The boys were tackling on each other; pushing and pulling, taking one down after the other to the ground. They laughed loudly like maniacs.

"What's with those guys?" Nino said.

"Don't know; Must be the seniors." Aiba said with his mouth full.

"How are you so sure?" He asks. But Aiba only shrugged his shoulders.

"Just a guess." Aiba said.

Nino then took a closer look at them; indeed he didn't recognize their faces, but one of them-- the one who's back was facing Nino's view-- stood out. Nino didn't know why but kept thinking that he looked familiar. He had quite lengthy brown hair which flowed along the direction of the wind. The guy then finally turned around, making Nino see his face clearly.

"It's him..." Nino says under his breath. The senior's name was Ohno Satoshi.

Nino never had a crush on a guy before. Though he wasn't much into girls, it never crossed his mind that he instead would be attracted to guys. But Nino wasn't attracted to Ohno because of his looks nor his personality. He was attracted by his scent-- the color of his scent that is.

They met a year ago, apparently Nino had gotten sick for a week and when returned to school, he was required to take the tests he had missed during his absense. After dismissal, he then went to the one of the juniors' classroom where his teacher, Miss Ishida, was the adviser of. Inside the classroom, Miss Ishida had been waiting for him. She then gave him his test paper and Nino sat down on one of the chairs.

Few minutes later, the classroom door suddenly slid open. Nino then looked up from his test paper to see who it was. The guy had brown shoulder-length bob hair; at a quick glance, anyone could have mistaken him for a girl (though he was wearing a boy's school uniform, so it was not much of a surprise). Especially with the seemingly soft features of his face. The only thing that stood out was his thin yet bushy eyebrows.

"Ohno," Miss Ishida said in a stern voice. "You're late. Where have you been?"

"I was at the gym practicing volleyball," Ohno explained.

"That's not an excuse. Even when you were absent last time, you didn't give a medical certificate." Miss Ishida then gives him his test paper. "Here."

As Ohno grabs hold of his paper, he looks to where Nino was. Nino, embarrassed, breaks eye contact by concentrating on his test again. "Who's that?" Ohno asks.

"I have a busy schedule today." Miss Ishida said. "So I had to let him in here too; he's from the lower grade."

"Huh, alright." Ohno then takes a seat on the chair beside Nino.

Nino tries not to get distracted by him. However, he suddenly starts to see a light shade of blue. The color was easy on his eyes and was very calming. Nino wondered where it was coming from. He then turned to where Ohno was and saw that he was sweating. "So the scent's coming from his sweat?" Nino thought. But he had doubts for, usually, when one sweats, it gives out a unpleasant odor. Even Nino himself didn't like his own scent-- a bright yellow scent. Ohno's scent was different for some reason. It smelled fresh and sweet like baby powder.

"Time's up." Miss Ishida then announced. "Pass your papers."

Both of them stood up from their seats and gave their papers to her. The sun was already setting as soon as they had finished. Miss Ishida quickly went out. Nino then fixes his things and puts it in his bag.

"What's your name?" Ohno suddenly asked, startling Nino.

"Eh? Me?" Nino stuttered.

"Of course, dumbass." Ohno smirked and let out a little laugh. "Who else is here in this room? So, what's your name?"

"I...I'm Ninomiya Kazunari."

"Kazunari?" Ohno says. Nino's heart slightly jumped when he said his name.

"Yes," Nino replied. "But people call me Nino; you can call me that instead."

"Nino, huh? Alright." Ohno nodded. "I'll call you Nino then." Ohno's voice sounded so smooth and clear. Nino didn't know why, but he likes how Ohno says his name. "I'm Ohno Satoshi." Ohno then says.

They then walked side by side at the hallway. Yet, neither of them said a word; it was too quiet. All that could be heard was the sound of their footsteps. Nino could still smell Ohno's scent. He gradually could see the light blue color as he quietly inhales it more. It was mystery for Nino on why he came to like Ohno's scent. At some point, he felt the urge to touch him-- Nino shook his head. "What am I thinking?"

"I'm going back to the gym," Ohno says as soon as they exit the school building. "Bye."

"Bye." Nino waves his hand. Ohno then went off, and the blue color had faded away.

As days pass, Nino's longing for Ohno's scent had grown stronger. He couldn't take it out of his mind; the scent had lingered on him. Nino wanted to talk to Ohno again but couldn't bring himself to do it. It's not like they had something to talk about. Nino knows that he's only attracted to him by scent. That's all that there is to it...

"Gosh, I'm so tired." Aiba said and yawned.

"Yeah, tell me about it." Nino replied.

The two of them were on their way home after class. They have been walking home together ever since they were kindergarden. It was like part of their daily routine; a tradition. Aiba is probably the only closest friend he has. After all, Aiba does know about his condition. But now, Nino has another secret he's keeping: him having a crush on Ohno-- a guy.

He doesn't know what Aiba will think if he tells it or what Aiba's reaction would be. However, he didn't want to keep it to himself. Of course, he can't open it to his parents; it would be too difficult to bear. He needs someone who understands him and accepts him as he is-- Aiba's the only one who could do that.

"Hey, could I tell you something?" Nino says. He could feel his hands getting sweaty.

"What is it?" Aiba asks.

"Well, you know about my condition, right?"

"Yeah, your smelling ability. What about it?"

"No, it's not that." Nino shakes his head. "It's just-- this is only just between the two of us, alright?"

"Alright."

Nino could hear his heart beating. "So," He says. "There's someone that I like."

"Okay, and so?"

The words were stuck in his throat. "No, I can't back out. I have to tell him." He then sighs deeply and tightly closes his eyes. "It's a guy."

"Okay, so?"

Nino suddenly comes to a halt. Aiba then also stops walking. "You...You're okay with that?" Nino asked.

"Should I not?" Aiba replied. "Don't worry, I like guys too. That's not much of a problem."

"Wait-- you what?" Nino exclaims. "Since when?"

Aiba shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. I just figured it out and poof, I'm gay."

Nino just gazed at Aiba, speechless. "I can't." Nino pinches the bridge of his nose. "I don't know what to say."

"You'll get used to it. Anyway, enough about me. So, who's the guy you like?"

Nino sighs again. "Ohno Satoshi. A senior."

"When did you meet him?"

"Ohno Satoshi. I swear I heard that name before..." Aiba then scratches his head. "Ah," Aiba snapped his fingers. "The volleyball varsity player?"

Nino nodded. "Yeah, him."

"Oh, wow," Aiba eyes widened. But slowly his smile faded away. "About Ohno... Uh, not that I want to discourage you or anything, but I think you should be careful of him."

"Be careful? Why?" Nino asked.

"One of my classmates got beaten up by him and his friends pretty badly." Aiba said. "The poor guy got their bikes knocked down by accident, and I guess, they 'knocked him down' too in return."

It was like Nino had seen a totally different person that time. "But, he was really nice to me..." He said.

"Well, who knows who the real Ohno is. Also, I heard he has a girlfriend; she was with them during the incident. I think her name was Yamamoto, a sophomore."

"A girlfriend," Nino thought. "He has a girlfriend." For some reason, he felt his heart sink.

"Don't worry, there are many more guys you'll meet in the future." Aiba pats him on the shoulder. "I guarantee because I had experienced it too."

Nino raised an eyebrow. "You know," He said. "I think you have to do a lot of explaining to me."

"What? You think you're the only one with secrets? Oh, please!" Aiba said and laughed. "Come on, let's get going! I'll tell you all about it along the way."

Aiba does have a point; everyone has secrets. There are no exceptions. Still, Nino can't imagine Ohno, whom he had got along with, to be the same person Aiba described. Ohno can't be a bully. And if he was a bully, why would Ohno talk to someone like him? Nino's heart sank more when he thought of that. What's more, he kept repeating it, over and over, in his head: Ohno has a girlfriend.

But he didn't want to give up. He still wants to see him. He wants to make sure about his feelings for him-- to know he's not just going crazy. To know if he really does love Ohno.
