Intoxication - Chapter 3

Nino finally arrived at his apartment; he was already sweating and out of breath. He then knocked on the door. Once it had opened, a smile slowly grew from Nino's face.

"Hey there," Jun greeted.

"I'm home." Nino says.

"I know." Jun gives a wide grin. "Come here, you!" He then pulled Nino inside and they kiss. Hearing Jun's giggling and feeling his embrace; a moment of bliss that could make Nino's troubles fade away. "So, what did you today?" Jun asks as soon as they break the kiss.

"The usual." Nino said. "Also, I went to visit Aiba at his new apartment."

Jun nodded. "I see..."

"How about you?"

"Hmm," Jun pondered. "Oh, the usual." He then kissed Nino on the cheek.

Nino had a big smile on his face. He was so happy to be home. After a while, he started to smell a scent coming from Jun's hair: it was a rosy pink color. "Did you change shampoo?" He asked.

"Yeah, it was given as a free sample." Jun replied. "How did you know?"

Nino hesitated. "It just...really smelled different."

"Really? Well, what do you think?"

Nino sniffs Jun's hair to smell it again. "It smells good." He says in a raspy voice, like he was breathless.

Jun blushed and laughed. "You sure are honest." He says as he tapped Nino's nose with his finger.

Suddenly, they heard a dinging sound coming from the kitchen. "The food's ready," Jun says. He then hurries there, leaving Nino. The latter then sighs. He hasn't told Jun about his condition. Not yet. He had already tried as many times as he could to tell him, but he didn't have courage to do so.

"The pizza's good, right? I had to reheat it." Jun said with his mouth full.

"It's a bit burned though." Nino tried to remove the burnt parts with his fingers.

"Sorry about that." He chuckled.

Nino had never thought that he'd once again eat with someone at home. These simple and quiet moments with Jun is enough for him to feel at ease. But to think he can't tell Jun his secret makes Nino feel guilty. Like as if he's being unfair to him.

"Hey, what's with that long face?" Jun asks.

"It's nothing." He says bluntly.

"Did something happen at work?" Jun bends forward; his face going towards Nino. "Tell me." His brown eyes were totally fixated at him.

"I don't know." Nino covers his face and slowly slides his hands against it. "I think I'm just tired. I mean, it's my first full-time job... I think I'm just overthinking about it."

Jun then stands up and brings his chair. He puts the chair beside Nino and sits down. He slids his arm over Nino and lets Nino's head rest on his shoulder.

"Just hang in there; don't worry." Jun said. "You're going to be alright."

It's another working day for Nino at the Kitagawa Hotel. It's not even past lunch time yet and Nino is already beat from going back and forth, room to room, carrying heavy luggages. He feels like his soul had drained out of him.

"What's wrong, lazybones?" The man at the front desk teased. "You look like a zombie today."

Nino groaned, leaning on the desk's platform. "Sho," He told him. "I don't think I could keep myself together."

"Whatever." Sho said. "First of all, why pick this job in the first place?"

"It's not really like I had a choice." Nino sighed. "Feels like I graduated college for nothing."

"What did you take anyway?"

"Business Management."

"Alright. So, what happened?"

"Things just didn't work out. I tried to put up a store but it flunked. I even had to work part time to pay my debts."

"Well, there's nothing we can do about that." Sho shruged his shoulders. "As much as I symphatize with you, I suggest you do your job rather than loathing about your past experience with misfortune."

"You and your fancy poetic wording, gosh." Nino then gently slaps his cheeks, trying to stay awake and focused. He watches Sho talking to the customer who had just arrived. "There's no way I can be like this guy," Nino thought.

From the first day Nino started to work in the hotel, he could tell Sho was someone who was way out of his league. On-point, agile, and never misses on details (his good looks and class are the bonus points)-- the perfect person for a front desk job.

"Here are your keys, Miss." Sho places the keys on the woman's palm. He then looks at
Nino, signaling him with the slight raising of his eyebrows.

"Here we go again." Nino then takes the woman's strolling bag and guides the woman to her room.

They take the elevator to the 5th floor and, as soon as the doors opened, went straight to the assigned room.

"You may press this button to call room service, in case you need anything." Nino goes on explaining, pointing out telephone on top of the wooden drawer beside the bed. "The restaurant and the swimming pool is on the ground floor. The fire exit is at the end of the hallway. Are there any concerns or questions you would like to ask, miss?"

The woman replied, none.

"Very well, enjoy your stay." He then closes the door. As he lets go of the doorknob, he felt his sweat sticking and wipes it on his pants.

"So, this is where I end up. I'm an idiot." Nino always dreamed of becoming successful, by what means didn't matter to him. To be able to do that, he sees it as a kind of revenge of the people who had seen him as inferior. He was fed up of being a loser. He didn't want to feel like anyone's servant anymore. And yet, no matter where he goes, that will always be the kind of job he gets.

Being a porter isn't as worse as the other jobs he had done in the past. But now, he's being desperate-- desperate in staying and continuing the job, hoping he might get promoted one day.

He presses the down button and waits for the elevator to arrive. He then sighed. "Maybe Aiba was right. Maybe I should have taken a job which I could use my smelling ability." The thought of it, however, makes Nino anxious. He doesn't want to stand out too much. And he doesn't want to make the same mistakes he made on that day, during his high school years. Never again.

The elevator's doors slowly open; one of the room service workers was inside, carrying a tray with a bottle of wine and wine glasses. Nino then proceeds to step in; the other steps out of the elevator. For a second, he saw it. Nino's eyes widened. He knew he wasn't mistaken, even if he hadn't smelled that scent in years. It was blue... a light, powdery blue.

He then felt his whole body shiver, like a ghost had just passed by him. "No way. Could it be?" He quickly turns around to take a look. He only gets a glimpse of the person's back and the elevator's doors had soon close.

His body had gotten stiff as a statue. He was sweating and breathing heavily; he could feel his own heartbeat. He had mixed feelings; he wanted to scream, cry, or punch the wall. However, all he could do was contain his emotions.

All the memories of that day were playing in his mind. It made him sick. He wanted to forget but he could still remember him. His soft, brown hair that used to make him want to twirl it; his round face, slightly tanned skin, and his dark brown eyes that could see through him.

"Ohno..." Nino uttered and clenched his fist. He had to accept the reality that the school bully-- his first love-- also works here in the hotel.
