Intoxication - Chapter 2
Four years ago, Nino was roaming around looking for a gift to buy at the mall. He happened to stumble upon the perfumes and colognes section. He was overwhelmed by the scents that were sprayed by the customers, who were testing the products. All the different colors that were mixed in the air made Nino's head spin.
"Is everything alright, sir?"
Nino turned to where the voice came from. As the strong smell fade away, Nino finally came to his senses and saw the man clearly. He was quite taller than him; he had black wavy hair, long eyelashes, and a mole under his lip.
"Are you alright? Are you in need of assistance?" The salesman asked him again.
"Ah, yes," Nino replied. "Sorry about that. Uh, is there anything here you could recommend as a present?"
"Oh, yes, of course!" The man then looked through the rows of perfume bottles. "May I ask, is this present for your girlfriend?"
"No." Nino said. "I don't have a girlfriend."
"Sister?"
"No."
"Mother?"
"No."
"For whom is it then?" The salesman said rather impatiently.
"It's a guy..."
"A boyfriend?!" He said out loud. The salesladies nearby started to whisper and chuckle. Nino felt embarrassed with the attention he was getting.
"It's just a present for a friend of mine." Nino corrected him.
"I apologize." The man said, averting his eyes and covering his mouth.
After a while, the salesman had found a small bottle of men's cologne. Nino had the cologne tested; the scent wasn't too strong and its color looked good too-- a fuzzy light cyan color. "It smells okay." Nino said. "I'll buy it."
The salesman then gave him the cologne in its package. "Thank you for your purchase, sir." he smiled.
Nino also smiled back. "Yeah, thank you also for helping me...Matsumoto." he said as he looked at the salesman's name tag.
The salesman then laughed. "You can call me Jun." he said. "You're welcome."

Few weeks have passed, Nino happened to pass by again where the perfumes and colognes were. For some odd reason, he can't take Jun off his mind. There was something Jun had that Nino was very fond of.
"Yo!" Someone, with a familiar voice, suddenly tapped his shoulder. Nino was startled. He then turned back and saw Jun. However, Jun wasn't wearing his uniform, instead he was wearing a light brown trenchcoat, denim jeans, and leather shoes. "For a salesman, he dresses very fashionably." Nino thought.
"Oh, it's you." Nino said, still scanning Jun from head to toe.
"What brings you here again, sir? Are you looking for a gift again?" Jun asks rather playfully.
"No, I'm here to buy myself shoes." Nino replied. "Also, cut it out with the 'sir'. I'm Ninomiya Kazunari. You can call me Nino, since you told me to call you Jun anyway."
"Nino, huh?" Jun says and chuckles. "Okay, Nino. You don't mind if I help you?"
"No, it's fine. I don't want to bother you..."
"It's alright, I'm off duty." Jun said with a sincere smile. As they looked into each other's eyes, Nino somehow could see sparks in Jun's brown eyes.
Nino then sighed. "Fine. You can come with me."
They then, together, went to the shoes section. Jun helped Nino in choosing the shoes; he recommended brands, colors and design, and material. "I think these would suit you well." Jun tells him. Nino would then try them on, one by one.
"Why do you need new shoes anyway?" Jun asks.
"It was raining that day. My old rubber shoes got ruined while I was working." Nino said.
"Well, what's your job?"
"I'm just a delivery guy. I only work part time though."
"Well, the rubber shoes that you're wearing now are water proof. I'd say you buy it."
Nino gave a faint smile. "Yeah, maybe. I'll think about it."
Indeed, Nino appreciates Jun's hospitality but on the back of his mind, he starting to get suspicious about him. It's only his second time meeting Jun, and yet Jun is being a bit nosy. It's like as if Jun's treating him as a close friend of his.
"By the way," Jun said. "Did your friend like your present?"
"Friend? Oh, you mean Aiba?"
"So, Aiba's his name, huh?"
"Yes; he's a pretty well-to-do guy. He doesn't really look like one though." Nino chuckled. "Also, I think he has a problem with his nose. He keeps putting on strong colognes when going to blind dates. He sure did appreciate the gift."
"That's good." Jun remarked. "So, are you going buy those shoes?"
Nino looks at the price sticker on the botton of the rubber shoe. He then shakes his head, "I think I'm going to stay away from this one."
"I'll buy it for you."
Nino looked up at Jun. The taller man once again had those sparks in his eyes, but Nino couldn't bear it any longer. "Just what are you doing?" He says, with a serious tone.
"Well, what do you think I'm doing?" Jun asks.
"I don't know. But I don't like it." Nino then takes off the rubber shoes. "Thanks for helping anyway." He then puts on his slip-on shoes and, without looking back at him, he walks away from Jun.
The following day, Nino brought enough money and went back to buy the rubber shoes he had tried on yesterday. As he finally steps outside of the mall, he sighs. "What am I doing?" He thought and bowed his head, looking at the shopping bag he held. He felt quite shameful since he bought the shoes in the end, despite his suspicions on Jun.
"You're really harsh, you know that?" A hooded man walks towards Nino.
"What are you doing here?" Nino asks.
"I just happened to pass by." Jun says. "And actually, I should be the one asking that."
Nino rolled his eyes and groaned. "Look, will you just leave me be? I don't want you following me or whatever. Go away."
"No way." Jun says firmly. "I won't."
"Well, what do you want from me?" Nino shouted. Jun then went silent. He averted his eyes from Nino's gaze and bit his lip. "What do you want?" Nino asks again.
Jun bowed his head and sighed. He then meets Nino's gaze and, as if whispering, he says, "I like you, Nino."
Nino's eyebrows furrowed, his eyes nearly squinting. "What?"
"I really, really like you."
He sighed deeply. "Seriously."
"I know," Jun chuckled. "I'm stupid." His smile then faded. "Sorry." He gave a pained look, like he was about to cry. And Nino, somehow, started to feel his chest aching at the sight of Jun's face.
"Um, actually, I do admit I'm also at fault here." He tells Jun, as to comfort him. "I didn't really mean to hurt your feelings."
"No, it's okay." Jun said. "It's fine if you reject me. I'm cool with that..."
"Rejection? What are you talking about?" Nino exclaims. "I'm not rejecting you."
Jun's eyes widened. "Eh? Wait-- so, you really are gay?"
Nino was quite startled with Jun's direct response. "Well, technically, yes." He says and gives a crooked grin.
"No way." Jun's mouth was gaping. "I don't believe it."
"And...just so you know, Aiba's gay too."
"I knew it. I fricking knew it!" Jun says rather happily, and loudly. Too loud that they're once again caught the attention of people. "Sorry." He bows his head in embarrassment.
"You know what," Nino said. "There's a good restaurant near here; we could talk there instead." Jun then agreed.

"Enjoy your meal." The waitress says as she puts the bento and noodles on their table.
"Gosh, I'm starving." Jun exclaimed. He then seperates the wooden chopsticks. "Thank you for the meal."
"So, now we can talk, right?" Nino said, as he had grew impatient.
"Oh, yeah." Jun blows the noodles and slurps them. "You were saying?"
"I was asking what you liked about me."
"Well," Jun pondered for a while. "It just came to me naturally, I guess. Like, here's this funny, cute looking guy buying a cologne for his guy friend. Or should I say gay friend." He laughed. "Anyway, it was interesting meeting you so I thought, maybe I could give a go. And you went with it anyway." He pointed, using the chopsticks, at the shopping bag beside Nino.
"Yeah, you got me..." Nino nodded and took a bite of fried shrimp.
"Hey, since you didn't reject me, what about you? Do you like me?"
Nino chewed and chewed. And after he swallowed, he said, "I don't know. I wasn't sure at first, but it's just that you're a really nice person. And you're quite pretty too."
The two were looking into each other's eyes, the only thing which was filling up the silence. Nino looked at Jun in awe; he suddenly had gone soft as soon as he realized he had felt it. He felt the same way when he first saw him-- a total stranger, an unlikely friend, and possibly a...
"What? That's it?" Jun said and pouted.
"Well I..." Nino's mind was now blank. "No," He finally managed to say. "The truth is that I was quite happy to see you again yesterday. For some reason, you were dazzling, like I thought I was dreaming. But I had overlooked those feelings that time, because I had become afraid. I was afraid that maybe I could be wrong. That it was impossible for someone like me..."
Jun just stared at him, not even a slight change of expression. "You understand what I'm saying, right?" Nino says, flustered.
Jun's mouth then curved into a smile and suddenly bursted out laughing. "For a man, you're too naive!" He said.
Nino completely turned red. "Knock it off." He said, but Jun still continued to laugh as he wiped his watery eyes. "Seriously, stop laughing!" Nino then hastily stood up from his seat and bent over the table. With his feet nearly tiptoeing, he managed to kiss Jun on the lips.
After their lips soon parted, Nino gets slapped on the face. "Don't get carried away, idiot!" Jun shouted.
Nino could still feel Jun's hand on his face; his cheek stinging as he touches it. "I-I'm sorry," Jun says, after realizing what he done. But, for some reason, Nino lets out a laugh. Soon, Jun started to laugh along.
"I think I've gone crazy." Nino said.
"Wow, you only realized that now?" Jun mocks him.
"Not really." Nino shakes his head and chuckles. "But, I suddenly want to ask you something."
"No, don't ask. You don't need to." Jun says and then smiles. "Because I already have an answer in mind."
