I was out visiting Flo's grave when Flower (see below) noticed me sitting in a spot where humans do not sit normally. She ambled over, grunting softly until she was standing right next to me. When my last rat (Harry) passed away six weeks ago, I was holding him in my hands and crying very loudly. My older cat, Starbuck, clambered onto the bed next to me, rested his head on my leg and licked my hands and gave a big sigh. He sat with me until I stopped crying and got up.

I rescued NSP on the evening of a particularly devastating break-up. That night, as I lay crying in bed, NSP jumped up on my chest and started head-butting my forehead and purring like a maniac...a fairly brazen move for a new acquaintance, but my tears instantly dried up. Over four years later, NSP still comes running whenever I start to cry and sticks by my side until I'm calm. He's a good fella to have on hand, that one.

this is why animals make such great friends. they know something is wrong and they want to help. puppy is great for letting me hold him or lean on him while i cry, and if i'm sick he'll come lay by my side and be mellow until i feel better.
