Hmm. I've been debating whether or not to see this, since I've so far only read the first book in the series. (I found it well written and very interesting, if maybe a little joyless.) I've read that it's not exactly spoilerish -- and in fact goes out of its way to end of a slightly different, earlier note, than the book -- but I still don't know.

I was supposed to see an advanced screening of it on Wed., but it sold out. I'm still vaguely interested in it, and I've never read the books so that won't have an affect on em at least. 8D

I liked it, but agree that it they tried to stay too true to the book.

My film teacher told me once that film adaptations should be just that adaptations, as telling a story on film is different than telling it on paper, and so it should be a different kind of story.

I think the Harry Potter movielizations kind of started this whole trend of "original text as holy scripture." It seems studios realized people hated it when they hacked the books, especially kids books, to shit to make the films.

(As a side note: The third Harry Potter movie was, I think, the closest thing to a film in the whole series. The rest are really just illustrated scenes from the book.)

Unfortunately, now there doesn't seem to be any film left to it. It's like a scavenger hunt to make sure you hit all the important scenes and don't screw anything up. They rush through the story without actually telling the story.

Now, I think The Golden Compass was much better than the first two HP movies, despite it's pacing flaws, and it's definitely enjoyable and ( ... )
