Banlieue 13 (District B13)

Remember those awesome parkour bits in the last 2 Bond films? This is an action movie all about parkour. The stars are founders of parkour and professional martial artists, and they commit absolutely to showing off what they do. You'll probably like this. Also, Luc Besson wanted to do a film like The Killer. Liked that? You'll probably like this. ( Read more... )

Luc Besson baffles me. To me, the hard part is actually making the movie; the easy part is wanting to make a movie that says something redeeming. (Redeeming is a trite word, but it's the best I can manage at the moment.) To Luc Besson, making the movie seems completely effortless, but actually being roused to say something seems a tremendous strain. And I say that even though two of my all-time favorite movies are written and directed by Luc Besson.

those are fabulous, thanks. I'm puzzled by this one:

A team of astronauts crash on a distant planet and discover that the dominant sentient race are gorillas, while humans are primitive savages. The apes agree to let the humans go after everyone realizes that God probably made this happen.

...because I've never seen religion work that way on real societies. I could, however, imagine it playing out like The Mission.

I would definitely pay to see the coming of age story about the girl and the loner vampire: it sounds a bit like a remake of Remains of the Day.

I found that one a bit odd, myself. I'm not sure if its an allusion I'm missing.

It would, as someone mentioned in the first post, be fascinating to see a film festival along these lines. A collection of shorts would also be entertaining, but I'd really love to see competent filmmakers attempt to tackle films in which nothing out of the ordinary happens. (Of course, even after fifteen examples by crisper and my own repeated participation, I'm still not entirely certain what the organizing principle is, especially with the new, puzzling addition.)
