NYC round 3: Atlas café, 'snice, Dosa man, coffee, bagels and Lula's Sweet Apothecary.

Nov 13, 2009 06:44

I'm back home in the UK now. Although in fact, I keep referring to Braddock as "home" too, so that's kind of confusing. Either way, I had a mini break in NYC from Monday until my flight from JFK on Wednesday, which began with a sleepless night spent on a Chinatown bus from Pittsburgh. It was totally worth it, though, because I managed to cram in ( Read more... )

6LBS IS NOTHING. When I first started uni I put on a stone at least. It was disgusting. I still haven't shaken it off & I'm having such trouble losing weight. I definitely need to exercise more but everything hurts & I have no idea what to do to keep fit but not be in pain! I have no willpower with food, either. I keep eating shite. :(

Chris is a lucky man. :D

Haha, welllll it's not "nothing", but luckily I don't think it's that noticeable other than a little extra around my tummy. I mean, it just told me what I already knew - I've been eating too many tasty sugary, fatty foods and should reign it in a bit lot.

Why does everything hurt when you exercise? Is that from being unfit or something medical? Sorry if that's prying, but it'd help with suggestions. I don't enjoy exercising, which sucks, but luckily I do love riding my bike. It only took me 21 years to figure out a way I could exercise and be happy :P

Also, you can still enjoy shite if you tweak it a bit... E.g.: I just had a fry up, but made it more acceptable by erm, not frying anything. Wholemeal toast, baked beans (protein!), then in the oven I baked 2 large mushrooms (B vitamins), veggie sausages (protein, lower fat, no cholesterol, easier to digest than animal protein) and some tomatoes (vitamins!) - voila!

I'll tell Chris you said that, too! :D

Aw, thanks! I was just about to cut it, actually, I'm really tempted to have a proper fringe back again... Just not as blunt/harsh as last time, I can't be bothered straightening my hair any more :)

OMG. Seriously. You are killing me, but I like it! The Vegan Treats website was slaying me, with its boston creams photo! Yikes!

I looked up the Apothecary last time you posted it, so it's nice to see your personal photos/evidence. Holy mother! I'd be in so much trouble if I lived out there... but at least the shame of going too often would stop me.

I'm envious, still, of your passion for baking and to open a shop.

I mean, I'm happy and all with my new diet and my exercising, but these treats look so killer!

Isn't it amazing?! Even more amazing is that Vegan Treats actually tastes even better than it looks, but you can tell just how horrific it is for your health as it's so incredibly sweet and indulgent. I (clearly) think that vegans deserve the option of indulgence though, back in the UK in particular, vegan is generally synonymous with "health food", making it seem way less attractive and accessible to "normal" people. I like how Vegan Treats successfully ignores preconceptions of vegan food as being good for you, and ignores other health concerns (not that I like other people's needs being ignored, but I like that it doesn't link vegan with healthy - having the option of junk food that tastes "normal" but is ethically ok is wonderful ( ... )

I appreciate the essay. After following links and looking at all the amazing desserts, I had a VERY HARD TIME not trading in my going to the gym for buying cookies and watching TV. I managed though, but just barely!

I hear you on the gluten-free cupcakes seeming more grainy, but I don't find that with all of them. I've stuck to the same recipe for GF cupcakes... it's worked well for me:

I admire your willpower! :) And thanks for the recipe, I'll give that a go some time soon. How do they compare to say, the vanilla cupcakes from VCTOTW?

Ah, I didn't realise! I was told to head to Atlas because they had "a case full of Vegan Treats" and I decided I needed to try more, so I just assumed that everything in there was from you. I've been scouring the internet looking for brownie recipes that would come out as nice and fudgy as yours, but no luck yet. Do you have any plans to supply places outside of NYC and Philly?
