My ex is in the same boat you are...he also has a specific skillset (he set up judgement reporting for title companies). He got laid off and is now working at Guitar Center (and doing DJ jobs on the side).
It really sucks that good, hard working people can't find work.
I know, time flies, doesn't it? You were lucky back then when you heard rumors about your old job laying people off. You jumped right on it and got lucky! Me, on the other hand, well.
I'm sorry this happened to me too, LOL. I wish I knew where I went wrong along the way, so I can try and fix it. As it is, it's too late now. I worked really hard to get where I was, working in shit jobs as a kid until I had a real job making live-on-my-own money, and it all went down the crapper.
It's a little more than 20,000 words right now. Technically I guess they call it a "novellette" on Amazon. It's written to a hungry market though, so I hope at least one person buys it.
You know I'll be buying that book, woman! Hell, you know I'll be doing more than that cuz if you need any help with anything while woking on it, I'm your girl!
This is such a crappy place to be and that ever year when it rolls around to another one, that the brick just gets a little heavier. Finding a way to have that self worth with no job is a task that took me over a decade and I at least have the fall back that no one looking at me expects me to be a 'productive' member of society - (which is a whole other issue, tbh).
I hope every year that this will be your year and I am going to continue to hope for that until it finally happens for you!
Aw, you won't have to pay for that book because you'll probably get stuck betaing it, LOL. Like, seriously. It's at 20,000 words right now and I expect it may be around 30 maybe when done if not more. I'm not sure how much it sucks! An unemployed straight guy goes to work out of desperation for the billionaire CEO of a successful gay porn studio, and they fall in love. I started this stupid story in 2013 if you can believe it and got sidetracked along the way. Now I'm putting my ass in the chair to finish the goddamn thing
( ... )
I will totally beta your book, babe! Then when people ask me what I do, I can say I'm an editor. I edit books for Amazon! LOL
I think this is a great idea actually. Normally I would say like, 'Oh this is no way to make money or get noticed,' but it IS. I have a LJ friend on here who put up about 6 or so M/M romance shorts on Amazon, self published and got invited to join an anthology of original stories, for which she got paid and then after three anthologies, the publisher gave her a contract for a novel, so there you go. It can work! And having goals will help you stay focused I think. (ugh on the outlines though because I hate outlining for stories - you too?)
It's a really good way to make money if you produce consistently and market properly. Believe me, there's been some crappy stories that sell. With spelling errors and everything!
