There are so many things to pray about. You know, important stuff, like physical and mental health, financial health (keeping jobs, renewing lease without rent hikes, the insurance/disability struggle), the Jamie struggle in general, so many friends at crazy crisis points that made our life almost feel stable to me for moments here and there

Aww, good luck! At least if it won’t start from the disk then maybe the problem isn’t the hard drive.. Still wouldn’t be good, but at least the files wouldn’t be lost, just kind of trapped for a while..

Did you try the mac communities on LJ and/or other mac nerd forums online? There are mac nerds in those places who seem to know everything there is to know about every mac model ever. I read a Finnish forum frequently, just for fun, and the nerds are amazing.

Mom, the clean freak, had thrown out all VHS tapes in the house because "nobody uses VHS anymore", not realizing there were home movies in some of those. Ari and I as little kids, family holidays and such. Dad was intending to get them converted to DVD, but now they're lost forever. It stings, but at least there are photos left.

it's times like this I wish I lived closer to you. I'm a mac user and I've resurrected a friend's computer like that (there's a way to re-install the OS WITHOUT wiping the computer, and it'll usually get you to at least where you can get your stuff off of it) but it's hard for me to help without being able to see it. :(
