Mercury went direct again yesterday, and even though I don't really put that much stock in it, man am I feeling it. It's like I found the gumption that I'd misplaced somewhere. That bento book looks good and uncomplicated. Some of the bento lunches, especially those prepared for young children by over-indulgent mothers, can get waaaay out of control with cutesy/complicated nonsense. (You don't strike me as the type to make the rice portion into a Hello Kitty face by cutting up bits and pieces of nori.) Bentos are a great way to use up leftovers, too; just pile them on top of or on the side of the rice and there you go.

My brother and sis-in-law gave me that book, along with a Zojirushi Mr. Bento and a set of matching placemats, napkins, and chopsticks, for Christmas the year before last... it was quite the theme gift. ;) I've looked through the cookbook a lot but never quite got into making anything from it until now. Probably the cutesiest thing in it are the chrysanthemum turnips, which are just kinda fancy. It is definitely less cutesy than the bentos on blogs like Lunch in a Box-- and I don't have anything against the cutesiness, I just don't have the patience for it, nor the collection of tiny picks. ;) That, and I find that just having small portions of different things in small containers ends up looking pretty cute cause it's just all so tidy and efficient. I have a couple of small segmented lunch boxes from Target that are very bento-like, and I'm using one of them today.
