Ok, so I've found myself in a quagmire of my own indecision once more. I do that from time to time, and this is no exception. I want a Playstation 3, but on the other paw I really don't want a Playstation 3. See what I mean on being indecisive?
Here's a little history to lead into my current quandary. Back during March of this year, I was given my

1. Inexpensive Blu-Ray player.
2. Wireless Controllers.
3. Some backwards compatibility. (Depending on which one you buy)
4. No longer needing a PS2 memory card to save games.
Cons
1. Buying new controllers, since I think PS2 ones won't work.
2. Spending $400-$500 on a new system.
3. Not a huge library of games right now.
4. Having to buy accessories to read PS2 memory cards.
I'm sure there are more pros and cons, but I can't think of them right now.
However you have a few options open to you now, if you are serious about this.
1. Buy a used PS2 to replace the one that broke.
2. Buy a used PS3.
3. Buy a new PS3.
Personally I would see if you could find a used PS3 first, preferably of the 60GB kind. That way you get the PS2 hardware support instead of the 80GB's software support. Also it might be cheaper than buying a new PS3.
In the end it's really up to you.

My reasons are this..
1 By the time there's a decent library of games you actually WANT to play the system will most likely be considerably cheaper.
2 I personally don't think BluRay is gonna stick around. I'm betting it'll go the way of the Beta and Laserdisc because the damned things are INSANELY more expensive and I have yet to see any real improvement between BluRay and regular DVDs.
3 Built In WiFi is NOT garenteed to work. My new Wii absolutely will NOT connect to my wireness network no matter WHAT I do and the Nintendo WiFi USB Connector won't even install on my damned Computer.
AS far as your zombie PS2 are you sure the problem is in the ports? Did you test the ports with controllers you know do work? Just curious cause I've had Controllers just crap out on me before and it was an issue inside the controller cord at the port connection.

I still think getting a new PS2 or seeing if someone can repair your PS2 is a better/cheeper way to go atm.. but that's me XP

And yeah, I might wait to get a PS3, if they make a new one that is cheaper and has BC, or get a cheap PS2.

The fact that they took the hardware-based backward compatibility out sucks rocks, too.
Maybe when I get around to getting an HDTV, but for now, the PS2 works well enough for me. :)
