Man, back in Charlotte, I was queen. I was the empress of the grad students in that department. I always talked in class, people came to my office for advice, both professional and personal, everyone thought I was brilliant... Right, okay, I admit, I pretty much grew up in the department at Charlotte, because I also did my undergrad there. I was in that department for nine years.

I dunno... They actually shout each other down! Regularly. Now, please don't misunderstand me - I am all about shouting others down in intellectual debate, but I have to have a strong enough investment in the argument to do it, and these arguments haven't engaged me so far. I did manage to jump in to rip up something one of them said, criticizing Braudel for being a "fan" of the region about which he wrote. I suppose it was something of an impassioned defense, but nothing like my usual diatribes.

The Windbag I think will be shot down more quickly in future. Last night, people were visibly shaking their heads and shifting meaningfully in their seats, though she didn't notice it.

Next week is Slave Rebellion in Brazil, so I should be strong there, and then in three weeks is my boy Carlo Ginzburg, and that should be the defense of my Windbag Title ( ... )
