Salinger

Jan 28, 2010 21:41

Mr. Salinger’s literary representative, Harold Ober Associates, announced the death, saying it was of natural causes. “Despite having broken his hip in May,” the agency said, “his health had been excellent until a rather sudden decline after the new year. He was not in any pain before or at the time of his death.”

I was really shocked which is stupid since he was 91 but it seemed like this day would never happen given how well hidden he was. Since he's my favourite and I often recommend him around me or check his books when I'm in a bookstore, he's almost always on my mind (sorry for the exaggeration, I can't help it !) so it was strange to hear that he was gone.

That's great to think that you have still his wonderful books to discover. Let me know when you read one of them !

And thank you ! It was so nice of you to comment.

Thank you very much Dear. It's actually very nice to hear everyone talk about him and say how brilliant he was ! Because he really was. I don't know if you've read The Cather in the Rye but I'm sure you'd like it !
Thanks a lot for commenting. It means a lot to me !

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ._.
He wasn't my favourite author ever, but he was special. I kept having day dreams about sending him letters and now that can never become reality.

*sigh*

I had a hard time getting over Vonnegut's death and now this. I'm going to join you! Tell me with which book we're going to start.

Thanks for commenting ! I remember thinking how strange it was that you could actually send him letters, that he was actually alive even though he wasn't writing anymore and that his books were published in the 50's. He was definitely special.

I started re-reading Nine Stories yesterday before going to bed. Does that sound good to you ?! (I wanted to start with his short-stories because I'm studying for my exams at the same time and I can read one when I want a break !).

Ps : Tell me what I should read by Kurt Vonnegut ? I only read one of his short stories a long time ago but I'm very much interested. :)

I saw the news and came over here to see if you knew already! :( I'm rereading Proust instead of Salinger {I'm sure you'll approve... ;)}, but it's not silly to feel upset over a favourite writer dying. My favourite writers are all already dead, but I certainly wish they'd all lived longer and written more! {a hug for you}

Thanks for commenting! So very nice of you and that means a lot to me. I've been reading different articles written about him and talked about him with friends like you and it's really heartwarming. I think you told me your husband was also a fan ?! So yes... we all need to say how much we love him and think he's a brilliant writer (I've read some articles -almost mean articles- that managed to irritate me !)

I definitely approve of anything involving Marcel Proust !! I finished The Prisonner yesterday ! You're re-reading some passages like you said ? or one volume ?
