It's a kids book, but So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane, along with the second and third books, Deep Wizardry and High Wizardry, rank among the most influential books I've ever read. The books after that are good too, but they're just entertaining stories.

Dude, I've been trying to remember the name of that series for like 5 years now. Thanks!

i really loved secrets of the tsil cafe by thomas fox averill, the speed of light by elizabeth rosner, and serious girls by maxine swann. i'm also currently enjoying birds of america by lorrie moore.

they probably don't count as books that helped me see the world in a different way, but i thought they were excellent.

Ah, drawing a blank. Um, the Apology and the Phaedo are sort of essential, and Socrates is awesome (even if sort of quaint in the particulars). They're kinda short.

I read way too slowly, or else I'd be able to suggest stuff. Um, I have something you could borrow - an LJ friend of mine, Nick Mamatas (nihilistic_kid) has a YA novel (which B&N won't sell as YA, because they suck and want kids to be dull and apolitical) called Under My Roof. I could let you borrow my copy. I still have your Ishmael. It's a light YA satire about white-collar secessionist fantasies, nukes, and a 12-year-old boy who reads minds. Very humanist, I guess.

Yeah, I wish I could say that I've read 40 books since the last time we talked about this, but it's only been like 5, and I can't seem to remember what they were or recall any as being super awesome.

That's okay. I'll add some of the philosophical classics to my list.

Jennifer Government by Max Berry - This is a book that is kinda scary if you ask me, it may not be a true story but it sure hits close to home about the way the world works. I would recommend it but others may disagree. May want to check out Company and Syrup by him as well. He is a very interesting author, good stuff if you ask me.
