Sleepy Hollow: "Sanctuary"

Nov 26, 2013 07:35

I didn't liveblog the episode last night because I wanted to give it my full attention, and this was definitely a good idea. I was just horrifically disappointed at all the commercials. I think the show as a whole would have been better and spookier if Black Friday hadn't reared its ugly head every seven minutes. :(

Spoilers! )

About Irving: I caught an implication that Irving's negligence was somehow responsible for Macy's disability - an accident that he allowed to happen, or something like that. But I am loving the relationship between him and Jenny, and will continue to love it regardless of whether it eventually turns romantic, and I hope that Jenny and Macy keep up their friendship, too, because it's really cute ( ... )

Whoa, I didn't get that reading of Irving's parenting at all... I actually think your interpretation would be better than mine in this case, since the "overworked Dad who doesn't have his priorities straight" is a pretty big sitcom cliche. The Dad who threw himself into work to hide his shame of being a bad parent is a better character. If that's the case, I might actually be convinced that Irving isn't secretly evil.  ;)

Crane doesn't seem to be well-versed in the Ways of the Ladyfolk, despite his smoldering good looks.

Yeah, I figured the Thanksgiving talk was sort of ridiculous, and I wondered about the billionaire thing, given the comedy that Austin Powers has been able to milk out of it. But I did like the end scene of Abbie and Crane drinking rum together, and her speaking to him about what family means to her, and then him opening up about his past life. That scene is the sort of thing I wish there were more time for in more shows, and I'm thrilled the writers included it here. :)

I wish I could remember the line that made me think that about Irving! I just checked EW to see if the recap picked up on it, but the recapper was bored with that plot and didn't write about anything except Macy's cuteness and Jenny's hilarious "I'm not dating your dad. I don't even like your dad."

The recapper did, however, include the awesome line: "Sometime after the Cranes' first visit, Katrina returned to Casa Fredericks on her own. Maybe she needed to hide from the hordes demanding to know whether she's a humble Quaker or American landed gentry?"

Anyway, yeah, that's how I read Irving's relationship with his wife and daughter. Because he cannot be evil! No evil Irving! He's too excellent!

And, yes, I loved the end scene with Ichabod and Abbie talking about family. That was great :)

I liked the fact that each person in the house had a connection with it (well, aside from the hapless bodyguard). And it makes sense that Crane might not have known that Katrina was expecting -- he was off on spy missions and out fighting a war. How many people do we know that have gotten their wife pregnant on some leave and don't have the opportunity to see the child for a good chunk of time while they are deployed? It would make sense that a pregnant Katrina would *not* be on the front lines as well. I personally think that Katrina escaped with the baby, but I'm not going to have any thought on what happened to the son yet ( ... )

Oh, man, that poor bodyguard. All he got was a few lines, and then death by something, and then no one thought of him ever again. Poor guy. :(

Yeah, the court stuff seemed a bit weird. Yebisu wondered aloud where she got off threatening a cop in his own office, and I'm inclined to agree. Unless Ladybird's theory (above) is correct, and Irving was directly responsible for Macy's disability, and then I guess I could see him rolling over for whatever the ex-wife wanted, as a way of penance or something. I dunno. Honestly, the legal mumbo jumbo was too melodramatic for me.

I'm not really hear for the baby plot, but then again I'm not here for any plot that tries to make Katrina happen - she bores me. And really, Ichabod didn't need any more manpain and angst on Thanksgiving.

I got the heavy implication that Irving was somehow responsible for Macey's disability. My money's on car accident.

Jenny and Macey need to branch off and have their own adventures, their interchange was cute. And I'm glad Amandla Stenberg is getting work, she was my favorite part of Hunger Games and I have a huge ass poster of her face on my wall.

I'd really like Katrina to get a little more agency in these stories. Whenever we've seen her (up until this point), we're either seeing her through Crane's eyes, or imprisoned in Molloch's Limbo of Aimlessness, and I'd really love to see something from *her* point of view or just meet her wholesale.

I would love seeing a Jenny/Macey adventure, because I think Macey would tire of Jenny's angst quickly and call her on it. This calls for some fanfic! To AO3! ;)

It's on our "To-Do" list. Yebisu is a big Karl Urban fan, and we might try Hulu-ing it over Thanksgiving.
