It's been written (if you'll forgive both the bad paraphrase and the repetition) that veterans are folks who, at some point in their lives, wrote their country a "blank check" for their lives.

I'm fortunate, in that mine was never cashed.  Indeed, most never are.

But some are, and for their full value.

Although you may not like that the meter or rhythm is all wrong (your words, not mine, I thought it was fine :) ), the heart is in it, and, ultimately, that is what matters. I loved the poem for what its worth, and I also send up my prayers to those who have laid down their lives for people such as I who can enjoy this weekend feeling safe in the knowledge that I do enjoy freedom thanks to all the men and women who put their lives on the line, and say a prayer to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep freedom alive ( ... )
