Mom and Dad tried to talk me into getting a teaching degree "just in case," too. (Unless your degree is also going to be English, you couldn't possibly have a more useless degree than mine, just for comparison.) I pointed out there were already enough teachers who were doing it because they couldn't find anything else, and that that was part of the problem with schools - they didn't really want to be there.
I graduated 12 years ago. I've never had to teach. I've had to do a lot of other things in between writing jobs, including temp work and even wedding catering, but I've never taught.
