Ricky is dragging his feet about getting a job. I twisted his arm into filling out some on-line applications this week. At least he has been doing some work around here in exchange for rent. He spent 4 hours this afternoon helping reroof my kitchen.
That's something at least. Maybe he's scared? I remember when I was coming out of addiction, I'd been shut up at home for so long I was downright bordering on agoraphobia, which is a lot more complex than just fear of open public spaces. I wanted a job, but avoided applying. It wasn't being lazy, I was simply scared. At home I worked like a maniac, cleaning and doing all sorts of repair work because there I felt safe.
You may be right about him being a little scared. But I think he may be scared of rejection. I was watching his face as he filled out one of the applications. When it asked if he had ever been convicted of a felony, he grimaced as he put down an explanation of the prison sentence he completed. That one bit of his history may make it embarrassing to apply for jobs and difficult to get one.
Addressing people by their first name was a very deliberate decision that I made early in my journaling. I believe that it helps make LJ a friendlier, warmer, more personal environment. That is the same reason that I freely give out e-hugs: *Hug*
I realize that not everyone here feels comfortable using their first name, as a matter of security and privacy, and I respect that.
By the way, would you prefer that I call you Deborah, or Deb? :-)
