My Weekend Wanders

May 30, 2018 14:00

On Sunday I decided that I wanted to get out of the city and explore the countryside ~one of my favorite passtimes. It was a gray day with some light showers, but that didn't stop me. I headed south where I explored the back roads of the upland hills in Cortland County, eventually wandering over into Cayuga County and Tompkins County, then down ( Read more... )

It is very helpful for me to take a day like that one from time to time, Jon. It helps me relax, put problems into a better perspective, and I get to enjoy some simple peace and quiet. I think most people could benefit from an occasional "mental health day". But I am sure other people would find different things more relaxing than walking through an ancient forest.

What is your ideal way to relax and unwind?

Usually I turn into a couch potato and hopefully have some good movies or shows to veg in front of.
I also like to go up to the zoo. :)

It all looks so beautiful. And so green! I love walking through ancient woodland.

The abandoned farm house looks like something from Scooby Doo. Perhaps you should become a location scout for Hollywood B-movies?

Two-hundred years is old for you guys - no? It seems like there are a fair few fine survivors in your part of the country.

We call it bracket fungus.

I am glad you enjoyed the pictures, Mark! :-)

This part of the country is normally very green (except when it is very white), but the damp weather that day helped make it look greener than usual.

Funny you should mention becoming a location scout ~I have fantasized about doing just that! But at this point, Even though I might enjoy it, I am not interested in starting a new career. But if a director ever wanted a haunted or abandoned house for shooting a movie, there are plenty of great examples to choose from around here.

Yes, 200 years is very old for this area. The first permanent European settlers came here in the 1780s, but development really expanded after the Erie Canal was built, 1817-21. Before that this was all Indian territory. New York City and Albany, NY were the first European settlements started in the state, both in the 1620s. Of course, London was a large and thriving place before the overflow of people finally spilled to this side of the Atlantic.
