Life Update

Jan 31, 2017 01:59

We finished up work on the apartment in the Italianate style house a block away.  (Photos to come soon.) The place looks great and I am currently advertising for tenants.  I have had few responses so far,  but people tend not to move in the middle of winter.  My crew are all laid off until further notice except for Josh, who has been helping me ( Read more... )

If Lily doesn't get a Valium, then I need one, Jon! LOL

Actually, it would be nice to have someone to cook for. The kind of meals that I like to make are a lot of work and too much food for one person to eat alone.
I try to make relatively healthy food, but often it has too many calories.

Aside from the frustration of dealing with the doctors, how is your shoulder doing? Is the pain decreasing any?

The shoulder is fairly status quo.
Although, now that I am off my restrictions and using it more, the achy pain is a little more frequent.

The flooring is stapled? Interesting.

Poor Lily!

Yes, Mark, we use staples, but they are made with heavy wire and are 2 inches long. The staples hold down the flooring better than nails, and cause less splitting of the boards. The pneumatic stapler sets them just the right depth through the tongue-edge of the boards at an angle. The process works quickly and efficiently ~until the stapler accidently fires two staples at once and gets jammed.

I really hope that Lily calms down as she ages (she is 3 1/2). :-/

Labs usually calm down around 3 or 4. I'm still waiting for mine to, who's about 2.

I love your icon by the way. Was Lily helping?

Thanks, Larry. :-)

The icon isn't Lily, though. The icon is from a 10 year old picture of Adam, my previous dog, also a Black Lab. Adam was a wonderful dog, with a sweet and loving disposition. He used to pick up my tools and carry them around. He wasn't playing with them so much as he was trying to be like his Daddy. It was very endearing.

I don't have any icons of Lily yet. She can be very cute, but it is hard to get a picture of her where she is not blurry. Also, she doesn't like my camera when it flashes at her.

Yep, poor Lily.

And I have to day ... I'm really impressed with your cooking ambition (and skills!). I seldom cook like that anymore, partly because it's less fun when it's just for one, but mostly because I don't have the willpower to portion out the leftovers! I would have eaten that entire quiche in one sitting, and I'm too old for that sort of behavior. :)

That Roto-roaster actually looks pretty clever! Seems like there must still be market for something like that. (Of course I'm not one to talk, since I just buy rotisserie chickens from Costco. :-) I just Googled the term out of curiosity, and the results I got were for a contemporary device that roasts coffee beans.

Thanks, Mark. I enjoy cooking ~and eating, of course. Yeah, willpower is not one of my skills either. If it were, I would weigh 100 pounds less! :-/

I found an old flyer for the Roto-roaster and added a picture of it to the post, just for you! It was a clever, and well-made product. My grandfather did not own patents on any of the items he manufactured. I believe they were all "public-domain" when he made them. I don't think he even owned a trademark on the name roto-roaster. If you searched through the home magazines of the late 40s, you could probably find an advertisement for them. There are a variety of similar and more sophisticated devices available on the market today.

Very cool ... though the woman roasting that chicken looks dangerous! ;-p

She does!

Maybe that devilish look on her face explains why she can handle a hot roto-roaster without oven mitts! ;-)

That quiche sounds, and looks, fabulous!

Hey, I'm starting to cook here myself! I made bacon-roasted brussels sprouts with a recipe from Danae's mother and they were really good. I'm eating vegetables!

Thanks, Chris! :-)

I am proud of that quiche recipe. It has taken some fine-tuning over the years to get it to turn out just right.

The Brussels sprouts recipe sounds delicious! I grew up on canned veggies that were boiled until mushy. That's probably why I hated vegetables for many years. I have learned that if they are cooked with a little thought and creativity they can be wonderful.
