Introduction to the Experiment Episode 33 Episode 34: Sakura, Yukito and Midday Moon (Card Captor Sakura) or By The Light Of The Full Moon (Cardcaptors)
There is going to be a quiz contest in town. Apparently, anyone can join but it has to be in pairs. Sakura wants to do it with Tomoyo but, at least in the Japanese version, Tomoyo doesn't want to (she wants to film Sakura doing the contest) but luckily Yukito shows up to offer himself as a partner. Later that night, Kero is looking at the moon, brings out the Book of Clow, and remarks that his powers have not returned. The next day, it's time for the quiz contest. In addition to Sakura and Yukito, Chiharu and Yamazaki are a team and Meilin and Li are a team. In the Japanese version, Li gets all snotty at Sakura for teaming up with Yukito. Anyway, the contest goes like this: There are ten locations where the teams will have to answer a quiz question. If they answer one right, they are directed to the next location and get a stamp. Once they get all ten stamps, they are directed to the final location where a plaque with the town's flower (nadeshiko flower as explicitly stated in Japanese version) is. If they bring it back with their ten stamps first, they win the grand prize. While this explanation is going on, the Japanese version has Li stare longingly at both Yukito and Sakura (who are having a grand old time chatting to each other) before he shakes himself out of his reverie. The first question is this: Ten matchsticks made a star shape. Using the same ten matchsticks, make another star. Luckily, ten-year-old Sakura has a sixteen-year-old partner with her and he knows the answer. Using the ten matchsticks, he makes the kanji for "star". He is correct and they move along. Meilin tries to argue that the matchsticks, if thrown into the air, resemble the stars in the sky. She is wrong. She also tries to argue that the ten matchsticks can be arranged to resemble the constellion Orion. She is still wrong. After answering the second question at the toy store, what follows is a montage of Sakura and Yukito proceeding the rest of the stations. At the last station, Sakura and Yukito come upon Chiharu and Yamazaki, who are now in the lead with ten stamps. Ms. Mizuki is manning this station and says that they must get a ball out of beaker without breaking the glass, reaching inside, or tipping the glass over. She also makes them do rock, paper, scissors. The winner (Sakura) has to answer the question. As Sakura ponders this, Ms. Mizuki and Yukito have a short chat. It seems like Ms. Mizuki is about to say something remotely interesting but Sakura interrupts with the answer: filling the beaker with water will cause the ball to float up and come out. She is correct and Ms. Mizuki give them the next location and the stamp as well as a whispered warning to be careful to Sakura. Apparently, there is going to be a full moon. Sakura is unnerved by this but continues on to Penguin Park with Yukito. Once in the park, they proceed through the woods. Sakura notices the full moon and remembers the warning (and her dream in the Japanese version) before she faints and falls down a cliff. Yukito jumps after her. Meanwhile, Kero is still looking at the moon and mutters "Sakura" while Ms. Mizuki looks at the moon and looks mysterious. Sakura wakes up later, perfectly alright, but Yukito is hurt and can't stand. Luckily, Yukito found the plaque before he fell and says that they can still finish. Sakura is sorry that she got him hurt. Meanwhile, back at the plaza, everyone is worried (everyone but Meilin, who is still working on the first question) since it's nighttime now and Sakura and Yukito are still gone. Tori and Li decide to go look for them but Sakura and Yukito appear before them, limping along. After checking on everyone's health status, Toya gives Sakura and Yukito matching pens.

This episode is... zzzzzzzzzz. Wait, what was I doing? Oh, yeah, this evaluation. My God, this episode is so boring and pointless. Seriously, what is accomplished? No Card capture, no revelations, barely any character development (Yukito is still here? Ms. Mizuki might know something important? Li might be bisexual [although didn't we already know that?]?), just nothingness. It wasn't even funny! It was just filler of the worst kind.
Card Tally
Sakura: Windy, Fly, Shadow, Watery, Rain, Wood, Jump, Illusion, Silence, Thunder, Sword, Flower, Shield, Power, Mist, Float, Erase, Glow, Move, Fight, Loop, Sleep, Song, Little, Mirror, Maze, Shot, Sweet, Big, Create, Change
Current number: 31
Li: Time, Storm, Return, Dash, Freeze
Current number: 5
Both of these titles make this episode sound much more interesting than it is. The English title wins because I hate the whole listing thing.
Barely anything is changed, much to my astonishment. I was surprised they didn't cut the first question scene but they managed to dodge the localization problem by having Julian simply know Japanese kanji for some reason. Maybe they have a big Japanese population at Reddington, who knows? Although I was a bit annoyed that Julian said that's how you "spell" star in Japanese. He should've said "write" star since kanji isn't use for "spelling". Hiragana is used for "spelling", if anything.
They cut the gay scenes. Madison doesn't get to gush over Sakura and Li doesn't have his "there's the girl/guy that I like, over there laughing with that other guy/girl..." moment as well as his jealous moment over Julian. These cuts neither hurt nor help the episode. I mean, they're cute and all but it's not like they made or broke the episode.
One change I did like was changing Julian's reason for being late. In the Japanese version, he's late because he couldn't prepare his breakfast on time. In the English version, it's because he's been "tired". This is a nice bit of foreshadowing since, in the manga at least, Yukito being "tired all the time" becomes a major plot point in the second half of the series. And it's a bit of a plot hole as to why Yukito doesn't have this problem in the first half so it's nice that they added that throwaway line here.
But, yeah, pretty much untouched. Besides those cuts and changes, the episode pretty plays the same in either version. I kind of wished the English version had made an attempt to add some jokes or something because of the dull nature of this episode.
The only weird change in this episode is with Zachary. What happened to Zachary's voice? Was Zachary played by a teenaged boy as well? His voice is distractingly deep for some reason or did I just forget how he talked? It's totally weird. By the way, Li is still high pitched.
Oh, and why did the English version keep saying "quiz" when they meant "question"? There were ten questions, not ten quizzes. I know in the Japanese version they keep saying "quiz" but that doesn't make any sense in English.
Plot holes time.
1. There seems to be only one stall per station. How did the stall maintainers prevent people from just waiting in line to see the first team's answer and then just copy it?
2. Why doesn't that town put some railings around these cliffs they have everywhere?
3. Wouldn't pulling Sakura up by her collar be a better way to stop her falling than jumping on her and falling down with her?
4. How did Yukito injure his leg like that when he was falling facedown when catching Sakura?
5. Why didn't Sakura get help first before bringing the plaque back? Was Yukito that determined to finish with her? Is there something in the water of this town that makes
injured people want to finish silly contests together with their friends despite their injuries?
In conclusion, because of the minimal changes, I judge these episodes to be...
Equal!
