curious pattern between the PsyKids; thoughts on Sam, the mytharc, and Jo.

ETA the Second that I've rewritten my original piece to eliminate direct comments from the person with whom I was originally discussing Jo. Other than that, my remarks and my opinions stand.

Y'all have been rocking my world with the discussions going on here. Thank you for giving me the chance to shape up my thoughts on these things. ( What follows is something that's caught my attention in replying and I thought I'd run it by those of you who've watched through the most recent ep. )

Huzzah!

You know, comments like the ones you quoted always vaguely creep me out. It's all "He's ours, bitch, keep away!", and all I want to do is smack them around and remind them that a) the boys are characters on a TV show and b) you are not their girlfriend. Me? I find Jo a nice addition to the SPN family. She and Ellen are keeping the guys (or at least Sam) grounded, and Jo is messing with Dean's head just a little bit, which always cracks me up. (Especially after his admiring comments about the Van Of Loooove.)

Glad to hear you are doing better in life and such. If you move to Chicago before Memorial Day, come on out to MediaWest! It's in Michigan and a nice fanfic convention. I'll be there! :-) Heck, you can bring your ferrets--it's a pet-friendly hotel, at least for the duration of the convention.

I went to MediaWest once years and years ago and had a lovely time. I'll absolutely see if I can make that happen again now that I'm fumbling around fandom again ( ... )

OMG you must video the drive to Chicago!

And the hotel restraunt manager at MediaWest has 2 ferrets, that he brings out on their little ferret leashes for one day of the con.

As to the PsyKids powers...yeah, there are definate wavelength issues here. Wonder how long it will take them to figure it out? (My money is on Ash figuring it out, after he hears all about it. Man, you know Ash would have been all over that Van of Looove.) Wonder if we'll see Mind Control Boy again?

I've never had issues with The Girlfriend, as long as she is written well. I just like the idea of Jo/Kiki harassing poor Dean. (snerk)

Your icon makes me an unholy kind of happy. See, I'm way more interested in what pantsless Ash might do next than what's going to happen with Jo. I mean, seriously. Pantless. Ash. How did people even notice there were other secondary characters last week?

I don't think a lot of people actually did notice the other secondary characters on the show. They were too busy reading old sides and interviews, highlighting the pieces they found objectionable and annotating any mention of love or romance with NO WAY!?!?! and HOW DARE THEY?!?!? fat black marker.

Well, okay, that might be a slight exaggeration. *g*

Besides, we all know that of all the new characters, Ash is the one who's going to get into Dean's pants first. And Sam's. And Andy's, and Ellen's, and Jo's, and that hunter guy who lost money on the video game, and the other guy who was cleaning guns in the corner...

I just can't do pre-emptive stress-outs over my shows. If stupid's gonna happen on it, well, they've already got that footage in the can and all I can do is pray for better eps in the future and spectacular fanfic in the interim.

And, yeah, the half-sister thing is looming as a possibility. What's amusing is that's totally when people will porn the hell out of Dean and Jo because it's all about the kinks in this fandom. (You know I'm right.) I hope Teh Krip doesn't go that route just because it does feel so heavily foreshadowed. Plus, to me, that actually expands Sam and Dean's world in the way I think most folks are worried that a recurring love interest might do. Lovers can be lost and left; family has to be fought for and held on to with a deathgrip in this 'verse. You'd think people would be way, way, way more worried about that, you know?

She's competent around the bar in a way that I think makes Ellen proud, but Jo is obviously the most incredibly green and untried wee'un on the planet.
That's what's always rubbed me wrong about the character. Others were trying to call her a hunter and I can't see her as anything other than a fairly decent bar chick.

Frankly and to be perfectly crass (forgive me, dearie), I don't care if Dean screws her. Whether for stress relief, because she's a cute little thing, or any other reason. Do I think she's his soulmate? No, that's his car. Even if he did abandon her to the Hefner-so-never-gonna-happen. Yes, I know... obi-wan'd. Still...

Back when she was on the sides as "Alex," my understanding is that she was originally slated to be a hunter. They've since retooled her into a young-for-her-age girl who sees herself as far more ready for the world beyond the bar than she likely is. My guess is that she'll have a bit of a reality check on her first hunt because this show has never been shy about the physical and visceral horrors of what these guys do. I want to see that before I have much else to say about her as hunter/peer/whatever.

THANK you. This puts my finger on exactly what bothers me about all the anti-Jo snark -- we've barely seen anything yet, and what we have seen is largely positive. (Also, it would not shock me at all, given the continued Star Wars patterning, if Jo turned out to be John's daughter, as some have suggested.)

But I'll let Kripke reveal what's up with Jo over time... I like her, I definitely adore Ellen, I'm freaking thrilled to see some semi-regular women on the show, and if anything gets in the way of Sam and Dean's relaionship, it's going to be something much more cosmic than anyone living at the Roadhouse.

The long-lost-sibling thing has me fearing for my sanity, and for the lives of a great many in the fandom, I must say.

But I think Kripke has enough of his mytharc shaped that he won't need to pull that level of bullshit to make it all line up in the end.

But thats just me.

I haven't got enough exposure to Jo to think about her seriously one way or the other -- I'd commented in winterlive's journal that I think the people getting the hate on for Jo has a hell of a lot more to do with Dean than it does with the character or the actress. There was similar reaction to Cassie before the episode ever aired.

As for Sam's taking the whole "we are evil" thing to heart, I don't think it's entirely what the demon said as much as it is one more thing layered onto Sam's already present guilt about the whole thing -- not that he caused it be will or desire (everything from Mary's death to John's, to the life they've led) as much as he's still the reason for it. What ever it is that Sam's got psychically or whatever, is what attracted the attention of the Big Bad in the first place (even if it's not true, Sam thinks it is on some level) but this is something concrete, something he can grab onto as a reason which for good or bad, Sam desperately seems to need in just about everything. If Dean's entire personality is an ( ... )

I'll have to mosey on over to check out your reply. I suspect you're right, that this is far more to do with Dean than not. I was sticking to the points that got brought up in the comment made directly to me. I didn't want to overstep in that particular exchange by making an assumption that Jo might actually not be the issue since I don't know the other LJer well enough to make that kind of guess ( ... )
