Wow. I've been paying more attention to Zahi Hawass ever since one of y'all brought up elements regarding his reputation of which I had been unaware. I realize one does nothing regarding antiquities or archaeology in Egypt without his blessing, but I still have to say the man is starting to scare me ( Read more... )

I have a thing for ancient Egypt. Lately it seems like every time I read or watch anything on the subject there is Hawass putting his 2 cents worth in whether or not the subject in question needs it. He's also a camera hog :(

It's one of his rules -- if he's not included in whatever project is going on that has to do with ancient Egypt, it's not allowed to happen. Witness the archaeologist who was banned from ever returning to work in Egypt because she (correctly) put together a hypothesis regaring a mummy without his knowledge.

Also? Note that in most of the articles you read about him, the journalists are careful to use phrases such as "he takes credit for (whatever) excavations" or "while his peers in Egypt say (something negative about him), they hasten to add that such a trait/action/whatever is not a bad thing." Wow.

As far as I can tell, this guy has no plans to retire. Ever. Here's another article with a few folks who are a bit more forthcoming in their criticisms of this wingnut.

And, yeah, I think we can look forward to eventual legends regarding objects cursed by Hawass and stories of him haunting various locations or museums. Assuming, of course, he doesn't attain that ascent to godhood he's after.

a friend of mine took a class that Hawass taught. his impression of H. was something like - if you listened carefully you realized he was making no sense. guess not enough people listen carefully. :)
megalomania aside, some of the preservation stuff sounds reasonable. but then again, that's a big aside.

As a student of archaeology and history the man drives me insane.

As a Stargate fan, the man scares the shit out of me. I keep expecting his eyes to glow and that freaky low voice to start coming out of his mouth. So when he starts talking about Seth, I back away from things very slowly and hope he doesn't notice.

We really do need to start an LJ community for this dude. *g*

Dude, I have always hated Hawass for his pompous attitude and deluded ideas that because he is in the position he is in, he is a god - I mean, WTFE!!

Too bad no one can stop him - juts denounce his ludicrious ideas - and after THAT crack - NO one is going to take him seriously - sheesh!

Dude - so much love for that last bit... SO much love!
