ETA links on why anyone cares about Hatshepsut's mummy. She was an amazing woman, to be sure. Here's this and this, too. And because that first link does not clarify the revised New Kingdom timeline, here's this and this.Despite Mason's attempts to convince me that he is clearly perishing from lack of treats, I'm afraid he's not quite as ( Read more... )

These are fabulous links. The claim about Hatshepsut's mummy is especially amazing ---- if it's truly her mummy and not some PR stunt by Dr. Hawwas.

I agree completely, both regarding Hatshepsut's mummy and the hope that this is not just a PR stunt. However, while I have seen premature announcements made, I haven't yet caught word of him doing anything deliberately misleading. Do you have reason to suspect him? Or is this just general apprehension?

You know, I almost wonder if I should do a small update just on Hatshepsut and her amazing reign as Pharaoh. ...Would you want some more neep on her? Personally, I'm always thrilled to provide that kind of info. If so, just drop me a line here.

I've been on a number of Etyptology groups that complained about Hawwas' authoritarian ways. I do know that he's always pressuring European museums to return Egytptian works, even those that were legally purchased. I would not be surprised to find that this was so sort of PR stunt, linked with the current exhibit on Hatespshut that's touring the US. But if not - well, what does it say about the current state of the Cairo museum that her mummy should be there for years and not be identified. I've been to the museum and have not been impressed with the way that the fragile works are displayed. But that's probably another issue and maybe not one that Hawwas' has control over.
I'll look up links and post them here - one book that I recommend is Joyce Tyldsey's (sp?) one on her. For all our fascination with her, we actually know very little of how she went from being a "normal" Egyptian queen-consort to Pharaoh.
