I haven’t been on LJ as much lately- exams, final assignments and quitting my job have been getting in the way a bit. Also, my Tumblr addiction ( Read more... )

Wow, so, so true... I think you get better as a writer, by writing!

My thoughts exactly.

I hear you about 'wobbly steps' but steps nonetheless. It may have been too soon for me to even think about writing a novel, but after ignoring my muse all my life, I just couldn't do that anymore. And I'm so glad I did.

I'm sure you have those same feelings! So good luck sweetie..

How's the new job going, or have you started yet??

Mine too :P

Yeah, I want to do more than fic eventually but writing is writing and I really think this has helped immensely. My muse is being pretty insistent about my NaNo novel too :P

Hopefully we get it done this year!

Haven't started yet, I think my first shift will be 1st November. I'm nervous though!

I agree that fanfic is definitely training wheels when it comes to plotting and writing action. At far as it is training wheels for characterization only makes sense if you are writing a whole different variant of the main characters (and example of this might be to write a dark or Red K!Superman where the motivations and backstory are extremely different.)

I don't know, I think it's very good for characterization. Taking characters and putting them in situations they've never been is a good exercise in keeping people in character- have you ever read a fic and gone 'I really don't think Clark would do that...' or 'Wow, that is so something they'd do!' :P

You do have a point there. That is the ONE thing that makes me turn away from a fanfic and write a critical review.

I do think it's different than creating a whole new character from scratch. That's the one thing I'm still working on.
