I haven’t been on LJ as much lately- exams, final assignments and quitting my job have been getting in the way a bit. Also, my Tumblr addiction...
But I saw this quote from Neil Gaiman on Tumblr and I just had to share it with you guys because I'm not going to lie, I'm embarrassed telling people outside fandom that I write fanfic, most of my friends don’t even really know. But on being asked his thoughts about fanficiton, this is what Neil Gaiman said:I think that all writing is useful for honing writing skills. I think you get better as a writer by writing, and whether that means that you're writing a singularly deep and moving novel about the pain or pleasure of modern existence or you're writing Smeagol-Gollum slash you're still putting one damn word after another and learning as a writer.
Side note: on his blog
where this was posted, he has an example of what he thinks Smeagol-Gollum slash would be :P
As much as I agree with this though, I'm not going to lie, I also agree with him when he says: I suppose I think of fan-fiction as training wheels. Sooner or later you have to take them off the bike and start wobbling down the street on your own. And on a related note, I'm starting my second original novel come NaNo this November (the first is unfinished and crap). I'm thinking it might be a wobbly ride too but I'm sure I'll enjoy every bump along the way :P
