As time passed slowly, endless and dark, Jaejoong tried to ignore the still form of the other who had seemed unconscious for hours now. After their brief interaction, and the uncontrollable reactions of his own body, Jaejoong decided to pretend the kid didn't exist. Maybe that would get him back to his normal self.

He needed to be alert, needed to plan, needed to gather his energy to fight. But he was unable to do anything, and hardly able to even move his body as it ached terribly. He found his only relief and escape in the colors of his mind. In his memories.

The reason why he was even here, the reason why he was beaten and half dead. The reason why he desperately needed too get out, and fast.

Kim Junsu.

The stupid idiot was always getting in trouble and would hardly have survived without Jaejoong looking after him all these years. Even though he knew he wouldn't be able to shelter him forever, it had just always been like that since they were children.

It used to be small things. Innocent incidents. From forgetting his homework, to breaking something, to getting punishment after school. Then one day it had all changed. The day Junsu turned 17. His father, one of the most powerful gang bosses, had decided his son was ready to commit, to follow in his footsteps and learn the trade.

He still remembered clearly the day it all started, but he could never have predicted it would come to this. Though, he should have been expecting it all along.

That day, Junsu had come wailing to Jaejoong’s apartment. His face was red from obvious slaps, and his lip was swelling with a fast appearing bruise.

Jaejoong had initially freaked, babying his blubbering accident-prone cousin, before the story came out. Jaejoong had felt his insides filling up with dread. He’d always worried this would happen, but that it was far in the future, too improbable to even prepare for. And now it was too late.

“Aish, babo-ya, why can’t you ever take care of yourself?” Jaejoong had huffed and flung himself down on the sofa. Junsu moved to stand beside him, twisting his hands anxiously and biting his lip.

“Hyung…what do I do?” The pleading tone, those tear-drop eyes… wearing his resolve down… for his only cousin. Baby cousin. Jaejoong sighed, opening his arms.

Junsu had flown to his side in a second, drawing a dry laugh from Jaejoong despite himself. His cousin melted to his side, clinging to him in a way he wouldn’t let anyone else do. If they tried they wouldn’t live to tell the tale.

“Don’t worry. You wont have to do a thing. I‘ll do it, Su. I‘ll join with you.” He had promised, but had been unable to stop the rising feeling of anxiety.

He hadn't really known what he was promising, even then. Hadn't known what he was getting himself into, getting them both into. He thought he could manage everything: keeping them unharmed and in school, while taking care of his father's jobs on the side. It seemed to work out for a while, but then one thing had gone bad, and it had only gone down hill from there.

**Flashback***

Junsu had been skipping class more recently. And he wouldn’t meet Jaejoong’s eyes. Jaejoong hated the way his shoulders hunched, hiding away from Jaejoong’s prying, the questions filling his dark eyes. Jaejoong couldn’t ever corner the boy, he’d slip away the moment his back turned.

Jaejoong was determined to catch him today and do whatever it took to drag the information out of him. Something was going on, and it obviously wasn’t anything good. Junsu only hid from him when he knew it was something that caused Jaejoong trouble.

He sat back in his chair, tipping back, studying the back a few seats ahead of him. Junsu was bent over, scribbling furiously, obviously planning on bolting out the door when the bell rang.

Jaejoong stretched his arms above his shoulders, eyes boring holes in Junsu’s tense shoulders. The frantic writing stilled, Junsu’s head turning slightly, as if he could feel Jaejoong’s eyes. He was sure that he could.

The head snapped back down, the writing resuming. Jaejoong heard the teacher wrapping up the class, and slowly lowered the two front legs of his chair to the floor. Any minute now.

Junsu was reaching for his bag, quietly and hurriedly stuffing his things inside. Jaejoong would have found it very entertaining and cute as his cousin was often apt to be, but given the circumstances all he could feel was worry, a heavy ball twisting in his stomach.

Junsu was zipping his bag increments at a time, trying to stifle the noise. The teacher paused, looking at Junsu in admonishment. “If you’re in such a hurry to be disrespectful, Mr. Kim, I’m sure you wouldn’t mind making up for it by remaining after to clean the desks.”

Junsu froze as some girls twittered. Jaejoong relaxed into his seat, smirking as the teacher continued, leaving a very deflated one Kim Junsu in his seat.

Jaejoong remained seated as the class finally finished, their classmates packing up slowly, chatting and making after school plans. The bustle and lively talk swarming around the two very still figures. Slowly they filed out of the classroom, as the two sat as if turned to stone.

Finally the last few students went out the door, a boy glancing incuriously at the two before deciding to shut the door.

Jaejoong waited a moment longer, letting the noise in the hall fade, before standing and walking to stand over his cousin.

Junsu was trying valiantly to pretend he couldn’t see Jaejoong, staring pointedly at his desktop.

“Su, what are you hiding from me?” Jaejoong cut straight to the point.

Junsu looked up in surprise, his face almost instantly crumpling, bottom lip trembling. Jaejoong sighed in defeat, anger dissipating in a few seconds.

“Junsu… you know I’m on your side. Tell me what’s going on, eh?”

Junsu hesitantly shook his head making Jaejoong frown. “You know you can’t do it alone…Hyung promised we’re in this together, remember?”

Junsu slowly nodded. Jaejoong reached out to ruffle his hair affectionately. “What is it?”

Junsu glanced at his hands, whispering, “He told me… I have to…I have to…do it. This time it’s m-me.”

Jaejoong felt the blood chill in his veins, his face paling. He’d been trying to avoid this, to protect his cousin.

“Hyung?” The pleading, wavering voice struck his heart. “If I don’t do it, he’ll hurt me…”

Junsu clutched his right hand suddenly, his face blank with terror. As if he could see the knife moving towards his hand right then at that moment..

Jaejoong reached out quickly to grab the shaking hand in his own. “Su…what did he tell you to do?”

Junsu unconsciously pulled Jaejoong closer, looking up, eyes brimming with the all too familiar tears. Jaejoong sighed, he didn’t need to ask more, he knew that look.

Jaejoong moved around the front of the desk and Junsu buried his face in Jaejoong’s stomach, wrapping his arms around his middle tightly. Jaejoong pet his hair reassuringly as he shook in his arms.

“Su, don’t worry. Hyung will take care of it. Shh.. It’s gona be okay.”

He’d promised Junsu this since they were young…and more and more recently as they worked for his father’s gang. And as of yet had never broken his promise. All the punishment, all the dirty jobs…he couldn’t let Junsu do it, yet in front of the boss, couldn’t let him not do it - as it would mean the mutilation of his baby cousin at the hands of his own father.

Jaejoong sighed deeply. There was no way out, and no end to it either. He had only joined for the sake of Junsu…had slowly trained his expression, his fist, and his heart. All to keep Junsu safe, and as innocent as possible.

He only worried about the day Junsu would be asked to carry out orders in the presence of the Boss until the end. Then there was no way he could do it for him. And he worried that this time may be that time.

“Junsu,” he urged. “What’s the job?”

Junsu pressed his face closer. “Hyung… I can’t do it… I cant…k-kill someone.”

Jaejoong could have sworn his heart stopped beating for a full second. Shit.

“Who is it, Su?” he pushed, and Junsu’s muffled voice responded.

“Uncle...”

Jaejoong was surprised. “What the hell, why would he want you to-”

“He turned into a spy.” Junsu cut in, words tumbling to get out of his mouth. “reporting to…one of Choi’s men…he‘s been interfering… dangerous…so, if I don’t…” He stuttered off.

Jaejoong’s mind was working furiously. How the hell would they get out of this. How could he protect them and not commit the murder, of a relative no less.

“Hyung! Let’s run away. Please.” Junsu’s voice broke.

“Junsu, you know we can’t do that. We’d be dead before we got out of Seoul.”

A muffled sob. Jaejoong pet this hair gently. “When?”

“N-next meeting.”

“Shh, we still have time…Let’s get you home first. Come on.”
