I got a big kikc out of it. There are a lot of "Diet Catholicism" folks who suddenly want to stand with Catholics in solidarity to mourn the pope. I'm more than just a little annoyed with it.
Oh I totally agree. It's been very frustrating to say the least. "I'm Catholic, but only go to Mass a couple times a year in order to feel better about myself and don't really think anything the Church teaches is right anyways because it doesn't make my life comfortable."
The best line in that is "Does the thought of Cardinal Ratzinger give you heartburn"...that is just priceless.
One other thing that has frustrated me is people calling the Pope "conservative" or "ultra-conservative". He's NOT CONSERVATIVE. That's political lingo being used for a faith based stance. He's orthodox, he holds true to teachings of the Church. I would hope that there would be other diet Catholics who could do the same because he showed that regardless of popular opinion, the Church is true. The Church has taught against popular opinion for 2000 years, and yet, it somehow has stuck around for that long. It's almost as if God has something to do with it ;).
"He's NOT CONSERVATIVE. That's political lingo being used for a faith based stance."
Totally! Or the press describing some cardinals as conservative or liberal, like this is some kind of democratic election.
"He's orthodox, he holds true to teachings of the Church."
--which is the job of the pope -- any pope. People are treating it like "oh, I want this guy" or "this guy would bring reform to the church". It's not a representative government, and it's up to the Holy Spirit who we get. I don't think we get the pope we want, but I think we always get the pope we need. Which might be scary, becasue the Church may be needing a big kick in the butt...

Totally! My dad says that an instution that has pulled so much stuff, and been politically active at times, and not always done the best things -- that has still survived 2000 years must be protected by God. ;)

Exactly. The 'refeshing' comment would be my angry cynicism. Suddenly there are people who want to stand with me in solidarity as a Catholic just because the pope died when they haven't been Catholic for years and have in fact been spouting much anti0Cathiloc verbag and attacked me for following that faith/world view. I am more than simply annnoyed by it.
The passing of John Paul

In their own way, folks like that are asign that though they may leave the Church, not only does the Church not leave them, but they cannot "escape" the Church and what it stands for. If they "feel" something at the passing of John Paul, it may be a teaching moment, if done correctly and without acrimony.
Remember, Paul, one of John Paul's patrons, had his own problems accepting the Truth. Augustine also had some difficulty applying the teachings in the face of his own desires.
The Greek bishops have been saying nice things about JPII. Fr. Andrew read their statement after last Sunday's service. Not *all* Orthodox feel this way, of course, but I thought you'd be interested.

Of John Paul, Memento mori.
