Martha moves in small circles. She never realized it until now. Now that she's celebrating that the Master is gone. Now that she's spent two years of her life fighting her way through the universe. Now, she comes back home and tries to pick up where she left off, and she is hit with how tiny, how limited her circle of friends really is. She used to see the artistic one, the one with the long string of ex-boyfriends, and so on; now she sees young girls from her class and country who she knows from her university and is friends with because they enjoy gossipping about the same actors as she does.
She loves them, but they make her world feel small.
It is with that on her mind, and tired from a year of running and a night of trying to enjoy a party with people who don't know her anymore, that she answers the door to find two fellow members of the Master's most wanted list standing behind it.
"I'm Sarah Jane Smith," one introduces herself, "and this is Jo Jones."
"I'm Martha Jones," she says, "although I think you know that already."
"Yes," says Jo, and gives her a beautiful smile.
They talk about the Doctor, and returning to life on Earth, and a dozen other things in her life that only they seem to understand. They've barely introduced themselves and they're already becoming Martha's new best friends.
Another small circle, she thinks at first. But then she remembers Jack, the rest of that most wanted list, and all the names the Doctor used to drop when some random thing would remind him of an old traveling companion of his. All the people out there with just this one thing in common: they understand.
She smiles.
