kernezelda 1. Surrounded by unfamiliar sounds in the darkness, several nights passed before Fraser could sleep among his fellow cadets. In their snowed-in shelter, bodies pressed close, it took less than an hour for Benton's breathing to fall into rhythm with Victoria's.
2. Benton had always been intelligent. Clever. He enjoyed the acquisition of knowledge, accepting accolades with grace and humility. But he could never remember the poem Victoria recited when he lay dying, until he whispered it to a black Chicago night.
3. Fraser learned camouflage long before formal schooling. Natural protection for predator or prey, but Benton chose to be neither. He slipped through life, heart hidden behind a blank face, a protector’s shield. Until a woman's fingers trembled at his lips.
