He has a beard now, to hide his youth, and long hair to hide his ears. His hands are clean: whole years have passed since the court magician last mucked out a stable.
He says, “I’m sorry, Morgana,” with an awkwardness that hasn’t left him.
“It’s all right, Merlin,” she says. “I knew, remember?”
She wakes as the first bolt hits her.
Merlin arrives with the medicine she doesn’t drink an hour later and watches - awkwardly - as she pours it away.
"Stop worrying,” Morgana says gently, when their eyes meet. “I'll be the one to take the blame, not you."
