Ace had been doing nothing in particular. She'd not long got back from her honeymoon and Ted had gone off to fine Chuck so she was left alone. There was plenty she could be doing in their new house but frankly she couldn't be bothered.
"Perhaps you just got a dud because all of ours seem to work fine." Ace spoke into the communicator, glad for the break in the silence. "Long time no see Mickey. You've missed out on quite a bit of fun."
"Hullo! Ace, right? Of course I missed out on fun. Predictable," he says, a hint of humor in his voice as he rubbed at some gunk blocking his view into the car workings with one hand, fishing the comm out of his pocket with the other.
"I wouldn't expect anything else with this lot. Maybe some mayhem on the side. Anything important I should know?"
"Got it in one there." Ace smirked at the humour in Mickey's voice, "Ohh come on, don't be like that. I'll bet my bike that there'll be plenty more before this whole gig is over."
Ace moved into the kitchen and began to make herself a sandwich. "Ohhh, yes we've definately had some mayhem. More of the Professor have turned up whilst you were gone. Actually, we've had quite a few people turn up lately. Dalek invasion, missing time, explosions, weddings, parties, births. You name it we've had it."
"Well, that much I believe. Just when you think it's over, it's not, of course. Though I bet our relative concepts of "fun" might differ a bit in the details." He wrinkled his nose at a particularly ugly looking part of the engine that was going to need work and sighed.
"More Doctors, brilliant. This all goes back to being laid at his feet. Their feet," he drawled, half-serious, half-past caring. "Sounds like people have been playin' hard in between fighting. Now that I understand. Had my share of moments back in the day when we were hunting the Cybermen. But if you don't have that, you go a bit mad." He hesitated before pressing on.
"Rose!" he grinned, then faltered. "Wait, different Rose? Or the same Rose? Or...oh hell. I'm not sure it matters anymore. It's a nice voice to hear in any case."
"Mickey the Idiot," It's said fondly!, "I haven't heard from you in a century or two." Thoughtful pause. "Communicator shorted out, did it? I could take a look at it."
Mickey groaned, though not with much real annoyance. "I knew he'd spread that nickname around. Look, I don't know what he's told you, but don't believe it." Alternate Doctors he's gotten the hang of, but girl!Doctors? Not a chance.
"I was trying to get back to the other world for a bit. Tell them what was going on, but it looks like my transporter doesn't work quite right anymore. Found myself someplace else entirely; not sure where, but it's not either world I was used to. Guess they'll have to do without me. But it sounds like you lot have been getting up to some madness while I've been gone. The usual, right?"
"I don't think you're the first person to try that." She replied lightly, shaking her head slightly. "Yeah. The usual. Just more insane than usual. Plannin' on coming back and joining us?"
"What, you thought I'd leave you to have all the fun?" he smirked. "I will be around, like it or not. Even if I'm just third-soldier-from-the-left in the grand scheme of things."
"Well, it's that third-soldier-from-the-left that saves the world, or so I've heard." The Doctor gave his head a bit of a scratch, "Heard something about you stopping a whole mess of Cybermen, too. Now that, that is impressive."
"As long as he has a big yellow truck. Or a rusted-out van. Perhaps it's fate telling me I should go back to being a mechanic. Or that it's gonna follow me everyehwere no matter what I do. Across universes - Mickey the Mechanic." He did beam a little at the praise.
"Yeah, did for them all right, with Jake. Pete's resources helped a lot, though," he admitted, to be fair.

"Oi, Mickey." Rose said brightly. "Haven't heard from you in a while. Where have you been?"
