"What, you thought I'd leave you to have all the fun?" he smirked. "I will be around, like it or not. Even if I'm just third-soldier-from-the-left in the grand scheme of things."
"Well, it's that third-soldier-from-the-left that saves the world, or so I've heard." The Doctor gave his head a bit of a scratch, "Heard something about you stopping a whole mess of Cybermen, too. Now that, that is impressive."
"As long as he has a big yellow truck. Or a rusted-out van. Perhaps it's fate telling me I should go back to being a mechanic. Or that it's gonna follow me everyehwere no matter what I do. Across universes - Mickey the Mechanic." He did beam a little at the praise.
"Yeah, did for them all right, with Jake. Pete's resources helped a lot, though," he admitted, to be fair.
The Doctor hummed a few bars of 'Blame Canada' as he stepped towards the console, "Time, date, whereabouts? Can get the TARDIS down to pick you up, if you'd like."
"I'm kind of in the middle of nowhere, actually." He glanced around at the scenery before slamming the van's hood shut. "The last town was Redmond. In Alberta. And let me check the paper for the date. God only knows. I think it's 2009, maybe." He walked around to the passenger side and began to dig through the pile of crap on the seat.
"Rose? Really?" The Doctor scratched his head and punched a few keys on the console, "Haven't any idea which one, have you? I swear, the universe picks up more of that woman than any other person. Slips her from different dimensions. Fascinating, actually."
He punched a few more keys. "Alberta. Redmond. Found that location on this map, there seems to be a few clearings to the south and west of that."
"Which Rose? Oh, hell. My Rose, I think. Or I'm her Mickey, more like." Mickey tilted his head sideways and furrowed his brow, momentarily halting his newspaper search. "Don't tell me you're a different Doctor," he sighed. "This is going to get confusing." After a few moments, he produces the newspaper.
"April 23rd, 2009, and this is yesterday's. So today's the 24th, and it's still morning. If you could manage something within the next fortnight that'd be fantastic." He rested his elbow on the van's windowsill, and examined the comm thoughtfully.
"You are a different Doctor, aren't you? You haven't called me an idiot yet."
"Mickey the Idiot?" The Doctor laughed at that, "No, it's...been a very, very long time since I've used that saying. Afraid I'm from a parallel dimension. Like you, now that I think about it."
He set the coordinates and the TARDIS took flight towards April 24th.
"Reinette," he called behind him, "Setting the TARDIS to Canada to pick up Mickey." Better off if she knew what was going on, at least.
"So the Doctor has doubles, too," Mickey pondered aloud, intruiged. "I hope you're more like Rickey was to me than Rose-the-Yorkie. That would be awkward." He blinked suddenly when the Doctor apparently spoke to someone else.
"Who d'you have with you, then? Reinette? You mean... You have Madame du Pompadour flitting about with you in your world?" He seemed caught between surprise and amusement.
"Yeah," the Doctor said, "She didn't die in my universe. 'Course, I haven't made it back to you and Rose, either. Since I leaped through that mirror, ooooooh, so long ago, now. Not yet. I will, 'course. Just...haven't. Not yet."
It felt awkward, every time he explained it to someone. Because, in this universe, everything was finefinefine, he leaped back through, saved the day and lived to fight on. He never made it back---he wanted to say he would eventually make it back, but then Rose wouldn't have spent eight years waiting.
Mickey took this in with a nod, thinking, taking it in stride about as well as he had taken everything else over the past five years.
"That's just plain weird," he said, finally. "But if things happen differently..." He trailed off and shrugged. "In the grand scheme of things, compared to everything else in the alternate worlds I've been in, I guess it's not so much different."
"I've met a few Roses, now. At least three. One couldn't get over that I was even alive - apparently her Mickey, the me in her universe, died while they were kids." He sighed and rubbed his forehead. "It's scary, is what it is."
At the warning of imminent arrival, though, Mickey perked up. The landscape was relatively flat, here, and he had a pretty good view of things, but the place was pretty vast.
Never thought I'd hear your voice again.
Still all right, then? Livin' an' fightin' the good fight and all that?

The Doctor couldn't understand why it was his other self was so against Torchwood. They seemed to breed such good people. Suzie, Mickey, Rose...
"So, where ya been?"

The words were said with both a tone of warning and a lot of affection.
"Still, nearly there, just look for a silver...somethingorother appearing somewhere in your area."

"Silver?" he asked, confused.
