Benton had just gotten off duty when he found it, a little communications device sitting there, blinking at him. It seemed like the sort of contraption that would belong to the Doctor.  Certainly not the sort of thing that someone would just leave lying around like that. He glanced around, but it seemed to belong to no one.  Deciding the best ( Read more... )

When Sarah Jane heard the familiar voice, she hit the communicator and smiled. "Benton? Is that you? My my.. it's been ages. I see you've gotten one of these things. Welcome to the end of the universe party."

"Hullo?" he answered, staring in confusion at the little box. "Miss Smith? Is that you?" He'd seen her just the other day--what was she talking about. "What party? Please, what's going on?"

"Yes, it's me Benton. Nice to see you. I was teasing, it's not really a party. Well perhaps a bit. The communication device you got is from the Doctor's people. Lots of people who've known him.. and some that haven't have been given one. We're trying to stop.. well the end of existance." Of course Sarah was right down to business. "Where are you, dear? And more importantly, when?"

He didn't say she looked different, but it was on his mind; maybe it was just the device. "The Doctor's people? You mean the Time Lords?" He put a hand to his head. "The end of existance? Well, if anyone could do that, I suppose it'd be the Doctor." He glanced around again. "I'm at UNIT HQ, right now. Although, things look differently. I was in the 1970s, but . . . well, maybe I'm not anymore? Is that possible? Where are you? Where's the Doctor, and the Brigadier?"

Hearing a new voice on the communicator, Nat sighed and pushed the button to play the recording she'd actually gone and made after the Third Doctors had showed up.

"I probably don't know you, you probably don't know me, but by finding one of these communicators I believe it's safe to assume that you have had some contact with the Doctor, in some form. I'm Natalie, by the way. Things are disappearing from time and space, and people have yet to figure out why. Most everyone is together at the home of Sarah Jane Smith in the year 2007, trying to figure things out."

Benton listened to the recording, his brow furrowing more and more as it wore on. "2007?" he echoed, mostly to himself. It all sounded utterly preposterous to him, but, well, stranger things, right? "Hello there, Miss Natalie," he began, uncertainly. "I'm Sergeant Benton . . . and I don't think I can get to 2007. You see, I'm sort of stuck here in the 1970s."

Then he looked around, and started to notice how very different UNIT HQ was looking. Had there always been a cordless phone over there? When had the tile been replaced in this room, anyway? And just where was everyone? "Or, maybe I'm already here."

"Well, if that's the case, Sergeant Benton, then I'm sure that it wouldn't be a problem for one of the Doctors, perhaps even the one you know, depending on which that is, to come get you." She mentally sighed slightly. "Or, even if it turns out you are. Depending on where you are."

"I'm talking to Miss Smith right now. Miss Sarah Jane Smith, do you know her? She seems to understand what's going on, at least, better than I do, at any rate. I'm familiar with uh, a few of the Doctors, though the most familiar with the tall skinny fellow, with white hair in fancy dress." He smiled softly. "I appreciate all your help Miss, especially what with me being a stranger to you and all."
