Fun with Food Science

I want to get some of the rabid animal rights people I've known and have them read the chapter on meat in my food science book. It's full of goodies. Like this little nugget right here:

"Slaughtering Conditions ... Both the conditions preceding slaughter and the handling of the carcass immediately afterward affect the tenderness of the meat. If ( Read more... )

I refuse to eat non-kosher or non-halal meat for completely different reasons, though - the amount of bacteria permissible in one gram of standard meat... UGH. Fuck the FDA.

Sounds like most of Austin needs to read your food science text :P

Yeah, if I could only eat Kosher or Halal meat I totally would. It would just stunt my ability to go out to eat way more than is worth it to me u_u; There are some girls at my school that can only eat Kosher or Halal meat for religious reasons, but my school dining hall doesn't ever use them so... Some people are pissed.

And yeah, they do. When I lived there I swear once a week someone was telling me that they hang cows from their feet before killing them. I knew not to argue-- I mean, how can you possibly talk sense into someone who would believe that in the first place?

Also, the FDA isn't in charge of meat. Meat and eggs are USDA territory, which is separate.

Had a friend that worked in a slaughterhouse. The general procedure is as follows:

1: Unload cows from truck.
2: Herd cows onto ramp.
3: Take the first cow in line into the building.
4: Shoot it in the head with something similar to a nailgun.
5: Begin the process of turning cow corpse into beef.
6: If more cows, return to step 3.

Yep, pretty much. My grandfather was in the cattle business, and if anything it made me MORE willing to eat meat knowing that it really isn't bad for the cows at all.

I didn't write it out there, but the corpse must actually be allowed to go in to and then out of rigor mortis before it can be processed and frozen, otherwise the meat will be unusable. So step 5 Probably entails them putting the freshly dead cow somewhere for a while before anything else happens.
