By the time Hermione had collected herself enough to be considered presentable, she was sure that the tea Draco was meant to prepare was probably already cold. Sighing as she stared at the full-length mirror in her room, Hermione tried her best to do away with the puffiness of her eyes and managed to get her hair somewhat under control, tying it back casually with a hair band. Pulling on a silken robe to remain decent, Hermione walked briskly through the cold halls, deciding not to Apparate for fear of rendering Draco even more distraught.

Fortunately, when Hermione finally managed to make her way to the kitchen, Malfoy still appeared to be hard at work, having found an antique kettle from somewhere in the cabinets. Suppressing an amused laugh at the expression on his face, Hermione knocked on the wall to indicate her presence.

"Are you in need of some assistance, Mr. Malfoy?"

Starting, Draco turned sharply and guiltily as if he had been caught doing something inappropriate. Of course, at home had he been making his own tea he would have been in trouble, but here he was mostly his own person. For the time being, he reminded himself, and immidiately turned around again to drop the kettle with a loud clang on one of the stove's burners before glaring at it uselessly. The markings were all worn off the old machine and he had no idea what all those numbers and knobs and buttons did.

"How do you work this thing?" he grumbled, finally turning to his last resort - asking for help.

He could see the redness in and around Hermione's eyes, and could see the slouching way that she was holding herself, opposite to her usual cheerful confidence. It was obvious enough to see, but he wouldn't say anything yet. First it would be safer to get a cup of tea between them.

Even though it came as no surprise that the wizard would need a prod or two in the right direction, Hermione couldn't help smirking a little at the embarrassed tinge that dusted his fair complexion. Lips curling into a grin, Hermione made her way over, arms folded across her chest and acting almost like a shield as she bent over to peer at the knobs on the stove ( ... )

Huffing, Draco eyed the contraption suspiciously and stood back once Hermione had finished putting things in place. "How do you know it won't explode or anything?"

He was about to wave for a chair to pull out from the table, realised he wasn't doing anything with his arm in the air like that and had to stomp over to the table and yank a chair to sulk on manually.

"Sit down," he ordered, eyeing Hermione seriously. "And tell me what happened."

He had delt with enough of Pansy's emotional fits to know when to cut in - if you waited too long the women just exploded.
