Books: Last Wool and Testament
Last Wool and Testament, by Molly MacRae. Mystery, 319 pages. Paperback, first in the series.
Kath comes booking it down from Illinois to her grandma Ivy's burial to find out that what she thought was a straightforward heart attack and inheritance was actually a mess. Someone else appeared to have ownership of Ivy's house, Ivy was implicated in the death of another elderly gent in town, and the newest employee at Ivy's yarn shop keeps lying about, well, everything. Every time she turns around, the local deputy is in Kath's business. Actually, face it, in a small town, everyone is in Kath's business.
It's a cute story, with some creative wrinkles to the various murders. I liked the little twist that there was a ghost who kept scaring off animals. The ghost's "talent" made the planted rattlesnakes in the kitchen too afraid to actually kill Kath. Little things. There were little things that annoyed me, too, like figuring out who dun did it about halfway through the book. The obsession wrinkle was a nice decoy, but not enough. I guess I just prefer my formulaic fiction in fantasy flavor.
I picked it up out of absolute boredom in the airport.
I recommend it to people who like fun female characters, can appreciate a woman actually laughing in a guy's face for asking her out at the completely wrong time, and are ok with frustrating small-town politics.
