Hog Island Sheep

Jul 19, 2011 11:07

I have a contact who knows a 4-H'er who may be getting rid of a small flock of Hog Island sheep, the same sheep you can visit in Williamsburg. Is anyone interested? This is a breed which is still listed as "critical" (less than 200 sheep) on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy list.

Many sheep breeds are... not cool. I did like our little jacob wether, though. He was doing a good job learning to be a goat.

Ok, embedding wikipedia links directly is just mean. Wikipedia is like the internet equivalent of a potato chip, you can't have just one...

Though to be fair it was a tiny entry. The only reason I actually clicked on a link was that I found the history of these sheep. It says they were developed from feral sheep already on the island in the 17th century... just found that interesting (what breed were they originally, when did they get there, why were they feral, etc., though the last one is probably same reason as why they went feral again in 1933)

I know your weakness bwa ha ha!

Yes, it's interesting how much and how little we-collective know about feral populations.
