Books: Must Love Hellhounds
Today was a day off from the world. Rather than doing great things, I read. And napped. And read some more. Ok, well, I did other things too, but hey.
Must Love Hellhounds is a book of four novellas by different authors. My biggest disappointment was that hellhounds didn't have a great deal to do with the first two stories. Yes, yes, the plot in "The Britlingens Go to Hell" turned on hellhound blood, but really any corrosive acid would have done just fine. Honestly, Robin McKinley's "Hellhound" story from the book Fire would have fit in better in this book than the second short story did; "Angel's Judgement" didn't need hellhounds at all for the story; the one hellhound was really a throw-in character. "Magic Mourns" was interesting and fun in a Greecian kind of way, but again, the Cerberus was unnecessary. When I finally got to the last story, "Blind Spot," and met Sir Pup, I was way more than ready for a hellhound to play a main character, dammit. And Sir Pup did not disappoint. He was a hellhound of the three-headed, psychic, human-intellgent variety. He had quite the sense of humor without ever giving up being a doggy. The smart and capable heroine/hero combination tasted good too.
Also, as a note/warning to anyone who can't figure it out from the back of the book: three out of four of the stories rank in "paranormal romance" as much as "fantasy/action." There's plenty of action, sure, but everyone has the hots for someone, too, and there is a new pair at the end of the story.
