I wouldn't even worry about Merc's opinion, and no idea why Carvis does. If he didn't pick up the food when you asked, then he gets to eat whatever you choose or feed himself if he doesn't want it.
I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to have other able-bodied people in the house who aren't pulling their weight and helping out when they should be. There's no excuse for you having to do everything, you already have enough on your plate. And if you need to keep stress levels down, that's even more reason they should be jumping to help out. I think sitting them both down for a talk might help, at least I hope it would.
Carvis helps out, in fact he does literally stop whatever he's doing to do what I ask. But he has a tendency to make negative comments a lot "We could have this but you two don't like this" and "She says she can't eat this or do that but then she has this or does this". In other words, a lot of complaining so that the atmosphere is negative
