Wow, I'm kind of surprised by how many people are annoyed by River Song... I mean, I see all the points, but for me, at least, it works. lol, I wish I had something more intelligent to say about it, but I'm having death by allergy today, so all I got is that I totally love her. :P
i don't see you making comments like, "I am tolerating her presence because I want to see her fuck up. BADLY. I want to see her fuck up and I want to see that More-Doctory-Than-Thou attitude bite her in the arse," or saying oh, she knows too much, it's so annoying! followed by, well obviously the doctor taught her everything she knows, so why should we have any reason to like her? or she isn't treating the doctor with the right amount of respect or some of the other stuff i am seeing here and all around fandom at the moment.
i still disagree with you -- i don't see the reason for staking out dislike of how she's presented in this story when we've only seen half of it. i mean, next week i might be joining in with, "jesus, moffat, what the fuck were you thinking?" but right now i think there is a lot of "show" that is communicating that a lot of the "tell" is bravado and that the story is more complicated, and i like that.
I am not charmed by River Song the way I am by other brash characters and by The Doctor. It's odd. I found her more charming in the SitL/FotD episodes and way more compassionate. She seemed more swashbuckling and kind of cold in this last episode. I felt like she was cataloging The Doctor's new face as an archeologist and not as a lover. Rose and Reinette both had great rushes of emotion and I think Donna, Martha, and Amy all did/do too. River Song did not really have that and it seems weird and I think there is something afoot, Watson and we'll find out as the episodes unspool.
A lot of what everyone else has said already. She treads the line of Mary Sueishness, and is too close to a replacement to the Doctor. I think there also may be some Jack-jealousy in there, too, because she's filling a lot of his shoes too, and Jack was such a fan favorite.
I don't think it has to do with gender. I think she's just really damn annoying. Though I do think part of that is deliberate. As thessalian said, she's more annoying here than she was in SitL/FotD, and I think that'd because she's younger and more smug here. I wasn't in love with the older version either, but at least it wasn't so condescending or so arrogant. And I think the lines she was given here were fine, the actress is just playing them a bit off.
Everything that you list about River Song that should make her a good, strong, non-hollywood type woman... Well it's all in Donna and Donna does it much better and less offensively

I really am troubled by the way my dislike of her was expressing itself.
