Backup Catcher News?

Nov 06, 2007 23:46

Someone asked in a previous post about who our backup catcher might be. Well THIS is the first news I've heard on the subject.

Apparently, the Rangers are one of the many teams who have expressed interest in Crisp. Off the top of my head, the teams I've heard in connection to Crisp so far are the Rangers, Twins, Padres, Cubs, Braves and Nationals. ( Read more... )

I wouldn't be saddened at all if Crisp gets traded off, but Laird doesn't sound much like he's worth it.

Since it's partial, I'll be going for Dougie's and Crisp's numbers in the same number of ABs (which will still be misleading, as Coco got regular time and we all know hitters hit better with regular ABs).

Crisp: 889 AB, .272, .335, .422
Belli: 907 AB, .232, .308, .415

Though I think Mirabelli's offense is quickly circling the drain, and that he isn't as good a defensive catcher as Laird is. Maybe he once was, but I don't think so any longer.

A straight-up trade of Coco for Laird I think is not good, but if Laird is one of the pieces we get in return for him, then that might be all right.

Who's that top prospect catcher that the Rangers got in the Braves' deal this past season?

Yep. He's a little more than just a prospect; he was seeing a fair amount of playing time with the Braves before the trade, especially considering that the reason why they were willing to trade him is that he's blocked by Brian McCann, and after the trade, he was one of two guys who had 7 RBI in the Rangers' 30-3 victory over the Orioles, if I recall correctly. I was a little peeved to see him go to the Rangers because I don't like them very much (least favorite team in their division).

Why does this sound like Josh Bard all over again with Dougie flying in to catch a game on the fly.
