It's a mid-century modern Two-Question Quiz!

I recently discovered that Google Books contains a complete archive of back-issues of LIFE magazine from 1936 to 1972. This delighted me, not only because LIFE has a lot of great photography in it, but also because I love retro advertising and all its peculiar foibles, so there's hours and hours of browsing pleasure to be had ( Read more... )

I suspect the "caco-" in question still means poo. According to Colleen McCulloch, one of the Romans' favourite insults was "Mentulam caco!" Which is even ruder than a Prince Albert.

Well, among the plethora of multicoloured swearing on Rome (the TV series), "cack" was a pretty popular word, so maybe this was an incidence of actual historical accuracy!

Good lord, the 'Prince Albert' reference made me quite choke on my tea. Then I noticed how Envious Chap With Briefcase looks inadvertently flirty - through my modern Slash Goggles (TM) - and recovered my dignity. Green beans for me, please!

Envious Chap is also quite lusciously lipped; bet he's imagining getting his pout around that pipe stem...

The problem with Mr Exhibit A is that you'd have to remove his personal pylon before getting down to business, and there's a fear that you'd find yourself pulling tons of wiring out of his ears at the same time...

Back-issues of LIFE?? Oh great -- another time sink I must drop into. Thanks!

These are hilarious. I do love how pipe-man is getting a double glad-eye. Ooooo baby.

Thanks for sharing. Oh! re; the dreadful-looking food. Are you familiar with the delightful James Lileks (of lileks.com)? He has two books out on dreadful-looking food and ghastly cookbooks called "The Gallery of Regrettable food" and "Gastroanomolies". I recommend both highly. (as well as his website)

Oh, I'm a huge fan of the Lileks site. All those hideous ornate savoury dishes in horrid meat jelly, preserved forever. I shudder and yet I cannot look away.

I am a cacographer in the sense of someone with bad handwriting, but not in the sense of someone with bad spelling. On the other hand, I am ALSO a graphomane, in the sense of someone with the urge to write! This is why I use computers. :P

Computers solve my bad handwriting issues, yet at the same time they give me far fewer reasons to write by hand at all and thus make it even worse than it was before. 'Tis a vicious circle.
