It's about eight inches long, with a thick green rubber stem and a bulbous, knobbly tip, and it's impressively heavy. Its packaging boasts about its "air-injected pockets for ultimate comfort", and it certainly made me raise an eyebrow when I saw it brazenly displayed in a major London store.

lol, that's somewhat hilarious. I was thinking it might be a small shovel or something because we have one that looks kinda like the first picture plus the 'what on earth could it be' pun was too good! :P

I had such trauma encountering this exact thing while Christmas shopping with Prudish Sister. She was unamused.

Is the boring-looking one i have from Ikea that just has sort of lines along it not a reamer but something else? Must it be knobbly to qualify for reaming? I'm so confused.

I think the pointy ridged ones are also reamers, or at least they are if you're American (I think I'd call it a juicer, or "one of those lemon-poking things"). Knobbliness seems not to be a prerequisite for reaming, but it probably adds a frisson to the occasion...
