I am going to guess that the Christmas beach BBQ is referring to Australia. Interesting, most people who go against the traditional meal seem to go for lobster and sea food rather than a barbie. Having a bbq on the beach at Christmas is actually very hard to to do.
Now pumpkin pie, there is something I have to taste one day.

I agree. BBQs are for Boxing Day, not Christmas - BBQs and listen to / watch the Boxing Day Test Match (cricket). It's 5.30am on Christmas Eve, and I'm just about to head out to the local shopping centre and get lots of fresh prawns and fresh tuna for our Christmas eating. The main city Fish Markets trade for 48 hours right through, in the lead up to Christmas, and there's just been a radio announcement that it's traffic chaos in there!

People also stock up on lots of yummy fruit - mangoes by the tray, lots of cherries, grapes and stone fruit, and plenty of salads.

My personal-tradition fave is kedgeree, which is always Christmas Eve supper for some reason.

Traditional favourite: Yule log.

If you're veggie, you should really pick up some lefse to try. My Norwegian grandmother used to serve it every Christmas.

There are a couple of Scandinavian cafés in London: I should see whether I can find any lefse there...
