I have been reading a fascinating series of books.  There are three so far, collectively referred to as the Hangman's Daughter Tales, by Oliver Pötzsch.  They are historical fiction, set in mid-seventeenth century Bavaria.  They center around complex crimes and investigations by a gruff and intimidating, but also open-minded and respected,
