Evidently the apocalyptic rain is upon us. fdmts is currently down in the basement, trying to slow down the flood of water coming from our walls -- a new one, actually. In case you don't know about them (I didn't until a friend mentioned it recently) there exist small portable pumps that suck water in through the bottom (and have a standard hose attachment on the top. They're designed to work while completely submerged - said friend used his to empty an above ground pool that he didn't want to deal with anymore. However, they also work for basement application, if you have a utility tub down there it might be worth the investment. Unfortunately it's plug-in so if the power is also out you're kinda screwed, but if your basement flooding is only occasional it might make more sense than the trouble of installing a sump pump, or the pain and backache of a wet vac.
