Historically I’ve wound up paying, or breaking even. The largest refund I’ve ever received was something like $20.
When I filed my 2002 taxes (in 2003, at the height of the anti-war protests), I actually owed about $500. Granted that was because I worked as an independent contractor, so I wasn’t having a bit taken out of my paychecks every couple weeks like most people. I seriously considered not filing, but in the end I wrote a check and put, “Books, not bombs!” in the memo line.
Yeah, you know that you can deduct many medical expenses? It doesn't make the situation less sucky, but it's better than nothing.
I've always gotten a refund, except in 2005, when I came very close to breaking even (I owed $8 to the state and $9 to the feds). This year we're getting a big one because the boy likes having every spare penny withheld on his W-4. Originally, this seemed like a stupid tactic, but I don't mind it now ...
