It's a lot of fun! And it has a lot of genuine affection for all of its characters and it doesn't rely on embarrassment squick humor either, which I really appreciate. I really *like* all of the characters (except for Pierce, but I don't think we're supposed to like him) and that's generally not something that's true for me in sitcoms or often comedy in general, even the ones I do enjoy.
That is exactly why I like it! Anything that pokes fun at its people is sort of a gentle, lovable humor - you end up caring about them. Their treatment of Abed is a good barometer for that, I think - he could have ended up being treated so differently.
Yes, exactly. I tend to feel like the audience is supposed to laugh *with* the characters and not *at* them. Not always, of course, and it has a few questionable moments, but in general I think that's true.
and I sort of adore it, which is fun considering that I can list the number of sitcoms I have ever liked enough to seek out and watch on purpose on the fingers of one hand, so I'm always pleasantly surprised and pleased when one works for me. Dude, I know! I never would have checked out this show if it wasn't for John Oliver, and I'm so glad he was attached to this project. Well done, Community.
