I made the same mistake. I had no idea that this kind of prejudice still existed to such an extent. It's heartbreaking, but I'm glad I know because now I can be a lot more proactive about it.

If there's any silver lining, it's that this was eye opening for a lot of people. I just hate that it's still such an issue.

I think the only thing that you need to say when you come across something like this is "this kind of speech is not acceptable and I will not tolerate it."
